VyprVPN is a mainstay in the industry and is part of the Swiss company GoldenFrog. It has revamped its service over the past couple of years, but I still had some concerns about security and privacy. So, is this VPN worth your money? How does it stack up against popular providers like ExpressVPN and NordVPN?
In this 2024 VyprVPN review, I ran VyprVPN’s desktop and mobile apps through some rigorous testing. Along the way, I sought to answer all the questions you might have about the service, including:
- How fast is VyprVPN?
- Can I securely access popular streaming services using VyprVPN (Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and others)
- What is VyprVPN’s logging policy?
- Does VyprVPN work in China?
- Does VyprVPN offer value for money?
You’ll discover the answers to these questions and lots more in this review.
I’ve been using the VyprVPN apps to keep my internet activities away from snoopers such as my internet service provider and would-be hackers. I’ve used it for everyday tasks, including browsing, streaming, and downloading, and recorded my findings here.
You can see a brief summary of my experience below, but read on to find out more about what this provider has to offer.
You can also read more on the criteria I used to test VyprVPN and our broader VPN testing methodology here.
VyprVPN summary
VyprVPN is a solid all-round VPN, especially since it reformed its logging policy. It works with a selection of streaming platforms, making it a good option for those looking to watch geo-restricted content from abroad. It’s also a fairly reliable VPN for users in China.

VyprVPN Pros and Cons
Below is a summary of the strengths and weaknesses I discovered during the time I spent reviewing VyprVPN. I’ll cover these in more detail later.
Pros:
- Owns its servers
- Doesn’t keep logs
- Provides strong security features
- Allows up to five simultaneous connections
- Offers a 30-day money-back guarantee
Cons:
- Relatively small server network
- It doesn’t accept Bitcoin
- Somewhat pricey
Speed: How Fast is VyprVPN?
VyprVPN has upped its speed game recently. I say that because the last time I tested VyprVPN, its average speed was 44 Mbps. It’s now over five times faster than that.
I ran speed tests at various times of day on servers in North America, Asia, and Europe. VyprVPN’s average download rate was 258 Mbps across all times and locations tested. This is very good.
Here are the average speed test results for each region:
- North America: 395 Mbps
- Europe: 228 Mbps
- Asia: 151 Mbps
VyprVPN’s average speed is more than fast enough for SD, HD, live HD, and 4K UHD streaming. If you’re not getting speeds close to the above, we’d recommend switching to the newly-added WireGuard protocol since that’s usually significantly faster than IKEv2 or OpenVPN connections.
If location isn’t an issue, VyprVPN gives you the option to connect to the fastest server for your location. In the server dropdown list, you can see the ping speed for each server. This denotes the latency and shows how long it takes to send and receive a request from that particular server. You can sort the server list by speed (based on ping time).
Switching between servers rarely took more than a few seconds, and I didn’t experience any dropped connections while testing. I was able to stream and play online games without any issues.
It’s worth noting that these tests should be viewed as a general indicator of the performance you’ll actually see when using these services. They’re by no means definitive, as the nature of the internet means there is always room for random deviations. Depending on the speed of your internet service, you may see smaller or larger discrepancies.

Apps: Which devices work with VyprVPN?
A VyprVPN subscription allows you to connect five devices at a time. This provider makes apps for the following devices:
VyprVPN’s apps have maintained their modern aesthetic from the last update. They’re lightweight and simple to navigate.
Once you’re signed up to VyprVPN, you have access to a network of more than 700 servers spanning over 70 countries. In the apps, servers are listed alphabetically by country by default, but you can sort them by region or ping time. Below is the list of servers currently available in VyprVPN’s network.
Startup options include launching the app every time you start your device or log in to your OS, and connecting to the VPN when the app launches.
I’ll discuss these in more detail in the security section, but other features include automatic wifi protection, a kill switch, and protocol selection.
The mobile app has a very similar look to the desktop version. Most of the functionality is maintained, and we especially liked that it includes a kill switch in the Android app rather than asking us to replicate this feature with the system settings.
Routers
You can set up VyprVPN on select routers. This requires manual configuration but enables you to protect every device on your home network. VyprVPN supports the following routers:
- DD-WRT
- AsusWRT
- OpenWRT
Check out this guide on VPN routers if you’d like more information on the subject.
Streaming, Netflix and Kodi?
Does VyprVPN work with Netflix?
Yes.
VyprVPN works with Netflix US, as well as other libraries I tested, including Netflix Germany, UK, Canada, Australia, and Japan. The last time I reviewed VyprVPN, I noticed that it had stepped up its streaming game. And streaming remains strong this time around as well.
VyprVPN also works with lots of other platforms that impose geo-restriction measures. The streaming section of the VyprVPN website gives instructions for accessing the following sites (among others):
- Hulu
- Amazon Prime Video
- BBC iPlayer
- Disney+
- ITV Hub
- All 4
- HBO Now
This provider offers minimal support for Kodi, but it does work with the platform via manual setup.
While VyprVPN’s streaming performance has improved considerably, here are our recommended VPNs for streaming if you’re looking for more information on that topic.
Does VyprVPN allow torrenting?
VyprVPN does allow torrenting and provides users with unlimited data, bandwidth, and shared IP addresses.
This service doesn’t promote its use for P2P in the way that some VPNs do, but it does explicitly state on its FAQ page: “Because our service treats all traffic equally, peer-to-peer and BitTorrent traffic is allowed.”
In the past, there were reports that VyprVPN penalized users for torrenting, but that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore. Note, however, that the VyprVPN terms of service prohibit “copyright, trademark, and patent infringement.”
VyprVPN doesn’t store any logs, and other than on iOS, all of its apps come with a built-in kill switch. There’s protection against DNS leaks, but WebRTC and IPv6 leak protection are not guaranteed.
You can check out our recommended VPNs for torrenting.
Does VyprVPN support split tunneling?
It does. But only on macOS and Android
Split tunneling enables you to choose whether you route your traffic through the VPN or through your ISP, usually on an app-by-app basis. So, you could choose to send your Netflix traffic through your ISP connection and send the rest out of the VPN. Or, you could choose only to send your P2P traffic through the VPN and send the rest through your ISP. It’s a very popular feature among commercial VPN providers today. While VyprVPN does support split tunneling, it only does so in its macOS and Android apps. Perhaps support will come to other platforms in the future.
Have a look at our recommended VPNs for split tunneling if it’s an important feature to you.
Security, privacy, and logging
Many VPNs claim not to log, but the reality does not always match the marketing hype. If you care about your privacy, you should care about your VPN’s logging policy.
We’ve had reservations about VyprVPN’s logging policy in the past, and I was keen to see if its recent improvements had addressed my concerns.
VyprVPN is based in Switzerland, a country known for its strong privacy laws. As such, there has never been any need for the VPN provider to retain logs of user data. However, until late in 2018, VyprVPN company policy was to record some identifying metadata, including “the user’s source IP address, the VyprVPN IP address used by the user, connection start and stop time, and total number of bytes used.”
Although IP addresses aren’t typically considered Personally Identifiable Information (PII), they can and have been used to identify individuals through their Internet Service Provider (ISP). As such, we try to avoid recommending providers that retain such logs.
Thankfully, VyprVPN overhauled its policy in 2018 and now keeps no logs whatsoever. The company even subjected itself to an independent audit to prove that no logs were maintained.
When it comes to security features, VyprVPN offers standard protection plus a couple of extras:
- Strong encryption: VyprVPN uses 256-bit AES-CBC encryption with 2,048-bit RSA keys and SHA256 authentication. Perfect forward secrecy ensures that a compromised encryption key can’t be used to view past sessions.
- A kill switch (except in iOS): This will kill the internet connection should the VPN connection drop for some reason to prevent data leaks. Note that this is disabled by default.
- Public Wi-Fi Protection: Enabling this will ensure your device connects to the VPN automatically whenever you connect to an untrusted wifi network.
- Protocol options: Choose between WireGuard, IKEv2, Chameleon, and OpenVPN, depending on your needs.
VyprVPN is different from most providers out there in that it owns all of its own servers. The norm for the industry is for providers to rent their servers from third-party hosting services. Owning its servers gives the provider greater control over security as well as ensuring reliable speeds and excellent uptime.
This service recently added support for WireGuard connections. This is a huge addition. The protocol’s open-source, streamlined codebase makes it significantly easier to audit. WireGuard boasts speed and security that is on par with, if not better than, OpenVPN.
VyprVPN uses its own private DNS servers, although the app does allow you to switch to a third-party DNS if you wish.
Protection against DNS leaks is built into the apps. The provider doesn’t claim to offer IPv6 or WebRTC leak protection, although I didn’t see any issues during my most recent testing.

IPv6 and WebRTC leaks are not a concern for most people, namely because not many people have IPv6 and also because not many webpages use WebRTC. What’s more, both IPv6 and WebRTC can be disabled if needed.
This service uses a NAT firewall to prevent unsolicited requests or data packets from entering your system, although these do have their limitations.
VyprVPN uses shared IP addresses. This means that every user connected to a given server is assigned the same IP address. This makes it more difficult for anyone trying to trace activity back to an individual.
One more feature that comes with a VyprVPN plan is VyprVPN Cloud. This is a deployment solution that gives you extra security when accessing cloud servers. It currently works with Digital Ocean, VirtualBox, and Amazon Web Service (AWS).
Does VyprVPN work in China?
Not many VPNs can escape detection from China’s internet police, so I was interested to see if VyprVPN lived up to its reputation of evading the great firewall.
Indeed, one of the things VyprVPN is known for is its ability to work in China. It has run into some issues fairly recently, but at the time of writing, many users are having success using the VPN in China.
VyprVPN uses proprietary software, giving you the option of using Chameleon™ metadata scrambling technology. This helps to mask VPN traffic, making it less likely to be identified as such by the deep packet inspection technology utilized within China’s Great Firewall.
The provider recommends using Chameleon for Windows, MacOS, and Android. IKEv2 is recommended for iOS, and while iOS users have had problems using VyprVPN in China in the past, these issues have reportedly been resolved.
VyprVPN keeps users up to date on China issues (and other problems) on the service status update page on its website. Here, you’ll be informed if users in China are having issues and how they’re being addressed.
Is VyprVPN’s customer service any good?
Support documents are available in multiple languages, including Spanish, French, German, and Chinese. Previously, VyprVPN provided live chat to customers 24/7 via the website. However, it seems to have replaced the live chat with a search of its Support section. Being unable to reach anyone through what looks like a chat window, I opted for email.
I asked Vypr about IPv6 and WebRTC leaks. I got a very detailed response from VyprVPN the next day, which is absolutely fine. And again, the response I got was thoughtful and detailed – very good support.
VyprVPN Pricing
VyprVPN has two pricing tiers. The monthly pricing is $10.00 per month, and the annual plan costs $5.00 per month.
VyprVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. You have a few payment options: major credit cards, Union Pay, and PayPal. I was disappointed not to see the option of Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, as this can offer a little more privacy.

Should I buy VyprVPN?
After thoroughly testing VyprVPN, would I recommend it to others?
In short, yes.
VyprVPN isn’t the fastest VPN, but speeds are quick enough for streaming, and it can unblock plenty of restricted sites. The service is secure and reliable and works well in China. VyprVPN has overhauled its privacy policy and keeps no logs, but there are still some privacy concerns with respect to IPv6 and WebRTC leaks and no option to pay via cryptocurrency.
Alternatives
VyprVPN is definitely one of my top ten favorite providers, especially since it has retracted its old logging policy. However, there are some great alternatives available.
ExpressVPN is highly secure and works in China. Express has the edge when it comes to streaming, as it boasts faster speeds and has an expansive network of servers in 94 countries.
If price is an issue, NordVPN is my top budget option. It offers a huge server network, many extra security features, and great unblocking abilities. It also works in China and offers great speeds.
Here’s a breakdown of how VyprVPN compares to the most popular services, ExpressVPN and NordVPN.

Our Methodology used for testing
Below, you’ll find the criteria used to assess the VPNs we review. It’s critical to be consistent across the board so that our reviews are as objective as possible and that we’re not comparing apples to oranges. For that reason, we want to publicize our criteria.
- Speed – Speed will always be one of the most crucial factors for any VPN. Aside from being annoying, slow speeds can prevent you from streaming or browsing the web. Our recommended VPNs scored very high in our most recent speed tests to ensure we address this issue.
- Apps & ease of use – VPNs have gone mainstream. More and more people use VPNs today for more varied reasons than ever. So app design and ease of use are more critical than ever. We examine the client apps’ UI, features, supported operating systems, and complexity.
- Streaming services – Accessing streaming sites over a VPN isn’t always easy. But many VPN providers claim to work on streaming sites – with varying degrees of success. Before recommending a VPN provider for streaming, we test VPNs against various popular streaming services, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, HBO Max, Disney+, Hulu, etc.
- Torrenting – File-sharers make up a large portion of VPN users. However, not every VPN provider allows torrenting over its network, while others go as far as providing dedicated P2P servers. We look at each VPN’s policy around torrenting and run tests on those to see how well they handle file-sharing.
- Security & Privacy – This is why VPNs exist in the first place. We ask essential questions like: What is the provider’s privacy policy like? What is its logging policy? What encryption protocols does the VPN support? Does it use robust ciphers? Does it support Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS)? Is it vulnerable to IP or DNS leaks? These are all crucial questions, and we answer them all when assessing VPNs’ privacy and security practices.
The above represents a high-level view of our methodology. If you’d like more details, take a look at our full VPN testing methodology. This data-driven approach helps us better understand the services to recommend the right VPN to users.
VyprVPN Review: FAQ
Can you get VyprVPN for free?
Some VPNs offer free versions of their services. However, these tend to be very limited, with access to fewer servers and features. While VyprVPN doesn’t have a free plan as such, it does come with a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee.
This means that you have a full 30 days to try out the full-paid version for yourself. While this requires payment upfront, you can request a full refund before the conclusion of the 30-day period if you’re at all unsatisfied. As such, it’s quite similar to a free trial.
Does VyprVPN keep logs?
VyprVPN is headquartered in Switzerland, a country with strong privacy laws. Regardless, VyprVPN doesn’t keep any identifying logs of any kind. It has even had its no-logs policy independently audited to prove this. This means you can maintain your online anonymity without having to worry about your data being leaked, stolen, or shared with third parties.
Does VyprVPN offer a student discount?
VyprVPN doesn’t currently offer a student or military discount for new subscribers. However, it did have a student discount offer running via Student Beans in 2022, so it may make this available again in the future.

See all reviewsI regularly (2-3 times a year) have problems with VyprVPN and if sometimes the support can unblock the situation, sometimes they just don’t know how to help you with their standard answers. They don’t even read about your problem in details and here they send a standard email. Writing back saying they should read about my problem more carefully, here comes exactly the same standard answer by mail !! (And this goes on and on). Enough now, looking for another VPN now !
Vypr is a disgrace to privacy and censorship. Here is a chat from today :
“We apologize for the continued trouble you experienced with your VyprVPN account, I will be happy to help you with it.
In order to further review the issue, I like you to follow the below steps and restore your purchase from iTunes:
. Delete the VyprVPN app from your device
. Tap Settings in your device
. Navigate to iTunes & App Store
. Tap User and log out
. Login with the same Apple ID that originally purchased VyprVPN subscription
. Download the VyprVPN app again, tap the Options menu, and choose Restore purchases
. Confirm your password if necessary
. Verify the app is working
Please note that if your Apple account doesn’t show an active VyprVPN subscription, you’ll not be able to restore the subscription using the VyprVPN app.”
My Apple account DOES show a paid subscription: The directions provided are outdated and are regarding an older version of iOS, nothing current was offered to get the app to work. I am a person that has had hacking issues due to Targeting, this company can be paid off . DO NOT TRUST VYPER! Very unprofessional!
I tried CyberGhost, Express and Nord VPN for weeks. None of those could get past my institution’s DPI and my access to the outside world was blocked. VyprVpn was the first to break through. Using their Chameleon protocol allowed outside access. It was a third the speed of the Wireguard protocol but getting access was the number one goal. It has enough of the standard features and a great price to lure me away from the apparent top contenders.
I am no expert on VPN technology and all I can say is I have tried a few others free and paid this has been the easiest to set up, fastest, and the most user friendly VPN. I am very pleased with it.
Update 15 July 2017
#1
First, I’m commenting only because I’ve just read this immediately after buying and installing VyprVPN. (I do not work any tech company) This is a very objective and fair revue. So that’s #1. I compliment this review. It’s not just fluff, and assumes someone’s reading and alert. Your comment on how simple this was to buy & set up,
brilliant. All those scary stories from among the masses of comments… Not my experience at all. Simple. Good support (answering a few questions, offering some links, and only once a bit “robotic”). Easy purchase, and…
#2
It’s exactly as you describe – this said after just buying it and only now reading this review, while closing tabs & tabs of Chrome pages researching the various VPNs. Very hot market, competitive, lots of hype, inducements, and changes. For example, I was just about to buy the yearly subscription at a “reduced price” (thru June 2017) when they’ve started hiring as business is booming (think privacy protection!) and lowered the price so that it’s really WAY less expensive than some once-competitive but “costly” companies, away from the U.S. So COST: Is now $5 month paid in advance (easily done IF use of credit or PayPal is OK with you – no bitcoin). It’s super simple all around, and using it is like any other app you may completely ignore or fire up or turn off on occasion – again, with ease. Oh, back to COST: The asterisk on the deal is that it’s a “one year” price and it auto-renews at a higher rate. BUT wait… it auto-renews at $80 a year from now (it’s in the receipt), and that is 4 cents less than the last special deal. “Just saying”… prices are dropping.
#3
It is just so…. easy. again, sorry.
It booted me up to Algeria. I thought it malfunctioned but I guess it’s default alphabetical. I set it up (Mac/70MBs down usually) and switched to a fast and local server, in about 3 seconds, intuitively – and the speed dropped slightly (to 63) and imperceptibly. Set it to work automatically whenever I browse, with Mac just check the boxes for which app use VyprVPN by default.
I am very pleased, as it may sound, I’m not a shill, I’m actually a scientist, working with AI, VR, etc. So I was dismayed at all the hype and lack of trustable data. I took a chance and it is amazingly simple yet important to use – for my needs at least.
Sorry to lessen a commission by saying it’s worth checking out goldenfrog’s new pricing promotion, but it worked for me, after reading so many contrary “#1” and “fastest” and “best country” etc. This just works, point-to-point, with easy control over encryption, from “off” to just web or chat or full-tilt “chamelion” – I am pleased and want to share this “update” and also say that this is one of the most fair and accurate reviews of come across. Well stated. Strengths, weaknesses, and the verdict: “Great”. Not to worry. Some of the many had stories to tell, but may not be your typical customer, now that so many are subscribing. Again, I don’t work for any VPN company! Just trying to survive this oh-so-always-connected world.
