Surfshark has been creating quite a buzz on the VPN scene over the past few years, giving some industry veterans a run for their money. Unlike many other VPN providers, Surfshark isn’t one for grand claims. It bases its sales pitch on privacy and security, but actually has lots more on offer.
So how does this VPN compare to the industry giants like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost? Does it offer a similar experience, or does it fall short?
In my Surfshark review, I tested desktop and mobile apps to see how this provider stacks up. Here are some of the questions I wanted to answer:
- Is Surfshark fast enough for streaming?
- Can Surfshark unblock Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, and other geo-restricted sites and apps?
- Is Surfshark secure and private?
- Will Surfshark work in China?
- Is it suitable for torrenting?
In this review, you’ll find the answers to those questions and many more.
I’ve been using Surfshark to stream, browse, torrent, play online games, and access public Wi-Fi. Below is a quick summary of my experience, but you can read on to learn more about why this VPN is increasingly popular.
Do I recommend Surfshark?
Surfshark is a lightweight VPN that comes with an expansive suite of features. It keeps no logs and offers plenty of security extras. Surfshark enables you to unblock a huge number of region-locked streaming services and works well in China. There’s no connection limit, which is a huge bonus these days.
Surfshark recently adopted the WireGuard protocol, which gave it a significant speed boost. This makes it a great choice for seamless browsing, streaming high-definition video, and torrenting large files. There isn’t much not to like about this VPN. We found that customer support isn’t quite as helpful as that of competitors, so there is room for improvement there, but it’s not a deal-breaker.

Surfshark pros and cons
Here’s a summary of the things Surfshark gets right and where improvements could be made:
Pros:
- Works with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer
- Kill switch in all apps
- Excellent speeds
- 24/7 live chat
- Works in China
- No logs
- Unlimited devices
- Allows P2P
Cons:
- Customer support could be refined
- May prompt captchas when browsing on mobile
I’ll delve into more detail on each of these points below.
Speed: Is Surfshark fast?
Yes. Surfshark fared great in our latest speed tests, and is among the fastest VPNs we’ve reviewed.
We tested multiple Surfshark server locations at three different times of day. The average speed across all tests was 594 Mbps.
The server locations were in North America, Asia, and Europe. Here are the average speeds for each region:
- North America (nearest): 521 Mbps
- Asia: 561 Mbps
- Europe: 701 Mbps
I was able to stream 4K video and use HD video conferencing while connected to various servers. And I had no issues playing online games while connected to each of the test servers.
In a previous review of Surfshark, it only averaged 71 Mbps, which means its speeds nearly tripled in 2021. Much of that improvement is due to the addition of Wireguard, a lightweight VPN protocol that offers much more bandwidth than OpenVPN and other protocols without sacrificing security.
Since its launch, Surfshark has been ramping up its server count pretty fast. Over the past couple of years, Its network has almost doubled to more than 3,200 servers spanning 65 countries. While some rivals such as ExpressVPN and CyberGhost cover more countries, Surfshark provides ample choice for most users.
Not only are speeds fast, but you can also expect fairly consistent speeds no matter which server you connect to.
It’s worth noting that these tests aren’t definitive and only offer a general indicator as to the type of performance you might see in practice. The internet is inherently volatile which adds a randomness factor to speed test results. Depending on your base internet speed, you may see larger discrepancies in speeds when connected to the VPN.

Apps: What devices work with Surfshark?
One of the biggest perks of this service is the ability to connect as many devices as I want to the VPN at a given time. Most providers restrict connections to between five and 10. This might seem like a lot, but these days, the number of devices a family is using could quite easily surpass that limit.
So which operating systems does Surfshark work with? Apps are available for the following:
- Windows 7 and newer
- MacOS 10.12 or newer
- iOS 10.3.3 or newer
- Android 5.0 or newer
- Linux Ubuntu and Debian
- Amazon Fire TV
As of 2021, Surfshark is compatible with Apple’s new M1 chips.
Multi-language browser extensions are available for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, though bear in mind these will only protect browser traffic and not your entire device.
Surfshark can be manually installed on compatible home routers, which will protect all of the devices connected to it without needing to install an app on each one. This is useful for devices that don’t support VPN apps, such as smart TVs, Chromecasts, and game consoles.
However, an easier option for many of those VPN-incompatible devices is to use Surfshark’s new standalone smart DNS service. Although you don’t get the full encrypted of the VPN, configuring Surfshark’s DNS servers will still grant you access to streaming services and prevent your ISP from logging some online activity. You can manually change DNS nameservers to the ones provided by Surfshark in the device’s network settings.
Surfshark has continued to refine its desktop apps. This time around, it’s added in tabs for its new paid features (known collectively as Surfshark One). These include an antivirus and an alert service that lets you know if your personal data has been leaked online.
The server list is displayed when you launch the app. You can connect to the fastest server or a server in the nearest country, or select a country of your choice. Countries are listed in alphabetical order. There’s a search function and I can add locations to a favorites list by clicking the star to the right of the location. You can see a rough indication of the total load on a location’s servers by looking at the circle to the right of the location name.
Notably, there’s a separate list for MultiHop (double VPN) servers, which is far more extensive than you’ll see for most other VPNs that offer this feature.
You’ll also find a list of static IP servers for several countries, including Japan, Germany, and the US. This option enables you to connect to the same server each time (instead of being assigned one at random), which is handy if you’d like to keep the same IP address. This is available on the Windows and Android apps.
You can change the overall aesthetic of the app to a darker version by enabling dark mode.
Other options include:
- Invisible to devices: This feature is available on Windows and Android and will make your device invisible to other devices on your Local Area Network (LAN).
- Whitelister: This is Surfshark’s version of split tunneling and can be used to send select traffic through a normal connection instead of the VPN. You can also do the reverse and only send select traffic through a normal connection. It’s available on the Windows and Android apps.
- CleanWeb: A feature that block ads, trackers, and malware
- Search: Previously named BlindSearch, this is a paid addon. It’s a private search tool that works similarly to DuckDuckGo and StartPage.
- Alert: This is another paid addon and was previously named HackLock. It’s a data leak alert system that will let you know if your email addresses or passwords have been involved in a breach.
There are several more features, including the kill switch, protocol options, and NoBorders mode, which I’ll go into later.
The mobile app is very similar to the desktop version so switching between them is a breeze. The feature roster varies slightly from app to app, but the mobile versions offer more than you’d find in many rival VPN apps.
One issue I did find on mobile was that after I started using the app, many search engine entries involved me having to complete a captcha before I could continue, presumably because the shared IP address was flagged for some reason. This is a minor annoyance but could be frustrating for some users.
Streaming, Netflix, and Kodi
Does Surfshark work with Netflix?
Yes, Surfshark users can stream 30 international Netflix libraries including Netflix US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, India, Singapore, France, Germany, Italy, and several others. If it can’t connect you to the library that corresponds to the server you’re connected to, Surfshark will redirect you to US Netflix.
Surfshark also works with Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, ITV Hub, All 4, Hotstar, HBO, Sky, and many other local streaming services.
Overall, Surfshark is one of the best VPNs out there when it comes to securely accessing streaming services.
The VPN works with most devices that run Kodi and is compatible with Kodi addons.
Does Surfshark allow torrenting?
Yes, Surfshark allows torrenting.
Data is unlimited, P2P is allowed, and Surfshark operates with a true no-logs policy. When you start running a P2P app while connected to the VPN, Surfshark will automatically connect you to a special P2P server (the closest one available).
A split tunneling feature called Whitelister allows you to choose which apps, websites, or IPs use the VPN and which do not. This is handy if you want to use the VPN for torrenting while using a regular connection for other activities, or vice versa. Whitelister is notably more versatile than split tunneling features we’ve seen on other VPNs, which are usually restricted to either app or website-based routing.
In addition, all Surfshark apps have a built-in kill switch which will force my internet connection to drop if the VPN connection drops unexpectedly. Note that the kill switch is disabled by default, but you can toggle it in the app settings.
Security, privacy, and logging
On the surface, Surfshark’s security features look fairly standard in comparison to other major VPN providers. It uses 256-bit AES encryption, which is as good as it gets. This is in conjunction with a SHA512 authentication hash and 2048-bit DHE-RSA key exchange, along with perfect forward secrecy.
Wireguard has become the new default protocol in most cases. It’s a newer and more lightweight open-source VPN protocol that offers a lot more throughput than its predecessors with comparable security.
OpenVPN and IKEv2 are still available in the settings. Shadowsocks encryption is an additional option for Windows and Android users, in case the other protocols cannot be established. Shadowsocks might be particularly useful in China or other places where VPNs are restricted.
Surfshark includes a kill switch that can be toggled on and off within the apps. This will prevent you from browsing unprotected should the VPN connection drop.
Apps come with the following features that you won’t often find on many other VPNs:
- MultiHop servers: Double VPN servers can add an extra layer of security and Surfshark has lots of options to choose from.
- NoBorders mode: This will enable you to use the VPN in restrictive regions such as China.
- Auto-connect: When enabled, the VPN will establish a connection as soon as your device is connected to the internet. This is particularly useful if you want to ensure you’re always protected when using public wifi.
- Private DNS servers: This provider uses private DNS servers instead of public ones, so you don’t need to worry about the likes of Google seeing your DNS requests.
- ChaCha encryption: Android users can opt for ChaCha encryption which often performs better on mobile devices.
- Leak protection: I found no evidence of IP, DNS, or WebRTC leaks when connected to Surfshark. This means third parties won’t be able to see my real IP address.
Surfshark is based in the British Virgin Islands, which also happens to be home to top-rated provider ExpressVPN. In fact, it’s no coincidence that they’re both based here and it’s clear that the two companies recognize the advantages of being located in a country where the government doesn’t require any data retention or reporting.
Surfshark is very explicit about its logging policy. It keeps no traffic logs and, according to its privacy policy, it does not keep user IP addresses, browsing history, session information, used bandwidth, connection time stamps, network traffic, or any other usage-related data long-term.
The only exceptions are the VPN server you connected to, your user ID, and a connection timestamp, all of which are deleted 15 minutes after the VPN session is terminated. Still, we would prefer this information was not logged at all.
You are required to provide an email address upon signup, which is stored, but if you use a burner email and pay using cryptocurrency, there would be almost no trace of you having signed up at all.
In 2021, Surfshark started checking user passwords against those exposed in known breaches in the Surfshark Alert Database. If it detects a password that’s been breached before, you’ll be prompted to change your Surfshark password. Don’t worry; Surfshark isn’t sharing your password with anyone. It’s just comparing hashes.
Does Surfshark work in China?
Yes, Surfshark works in China.
Surfshark has recently added a large number of additional servers. One of the major reasons for this is to provide as many IP addresses as possible to help defend against China’s blocking process. Surfshark has dedicated testers in China who can confirm if all is well or if there are any issues.
It’s becoming increasingly difficult for VPN providers to evade the Great Firewall of China and few are able to do it reliably. Many will come right out and say that’s it too difficult and they’ve all but given up, whereas you have others, like Surfshark, who keep fighting to offer access to the free web.
Is Surfshark customer service any good?
Navigating to the Help section on Surfshark’s website, you’ll find a decent amount of information to help you get started with the service. There are various setup guides, including manual connection guides, router tutorials, and extension and app guides. In addition, some FAQs are answered.
Most of what you need should be there, but if not, 24/7 live chat is available to help. I used this service a handful of times and received courteous and prompt responses that helped resolve my issues and answer questions.
The live chat feature is outsourced to Zendesk, so those looking for the utmost privacy may want to use the email form. This seems to be well manned and I got a response to my query in under an hour.
That said, there may be some more work to do on the customer service front. Although I had good experiences, we have heard from other users who have had issues getting a refund from Surfshark when they decided not to use the service. I was assured by a representative that getting a refund is as simple as contacting the team through live chat or email, and one of our writers successfully tested the refund policy recently, so hopefully future users won’t run into the same problems.

Should I buy Surfshark?
It turns out that Surfshark is very deserving of all the buzz and this provider has a lot going for it. It offers reliable service and takes privacy and security very seriously. Plus, it has excellent speeds for streaming and even works in China. An unlimited number of simultaneous connections may be the tipper for some users.
The only real concern regarding Surfshark’s service stems from the complaints around the company’s refund policy. This is an important area of customer service so I’m keen to see if Surfshark holds true to its 30-day guarantee in the future.
Surfshark alternatives
While Surfshark provides an excellent all-round service, there’s room for improvement in a couple of areas. If you’re looking for the fastest VPN available, then you might want to consider NordVPN or IPVanish. They outperform many competitors when it comes to speeds and they perform well in other areas as well.
NordVPN has over 5,500 servers, far more than most other providers. Plus, it boasts excellent security and top-notch customer support. It’s great for unblocking geo-restricted streaming sites and can help you access the free web in China.

Surfshark FAQs
Does Surfshark offer a student discount?
Yes, Surfshark offers a student discount with significant savings. Register or sign in to your Student Beans account, search for Surfshark, and you’ll be directed to an exclusive page for students.
What is Surfshark Camouflage Mode?
Surfshark Camouflage Mode is an exclusive security feature designed to ensure your online activities remain anonymous and secure. It obfuscates your network traffic, making it difficult for anyone monitoring or snooping on your connection to identify which websites you’re visiting, what files you’re downloading, or what services you’re using. This makes it much harder for potential attackers to target you based on your online activity and provides an extra layer of security when browsing the internet.

It used to be a great VPN which has shown a great decline in performance lately.
Customer Support:
– Their live chat is glitchy and doesn’t solve any problems.
– Email Chat is just pathetic, and they take an entire day to reply to your query.
If you face any problem, you feel like fixing quickly, and then surf shark is not there to help because they will take at least a day to give you pre-made replies.
Connectivity:
– The connection keeps on dropping. If you want to stick to one location, you can’t because all of their locations are very weak, and they do not have stable connectivity.
– Majority of the IP addresses are backlisted.
– If you’re getting Wi-Fi from a mobile hotspot, SurfShark will give you a lot of trouble.
Conclusion:
If you’re a business professional or someone who really values your time, please do not go for SurfShark, because the majority of the time, you will either be fixing your own connection with SurfShark’s unstable locations or will be wasting your time contacting their highly unhelpful live chat.
I have requested SurfShark to give my money back as I have paid for 2 years, the biggest mistake of my life.
I’m nowhere near into tech so here’s a mini review – my favorite show was taken off my Netflix, a friend told me I could access it with a VPN, I got Surfshark because it was cheap, and it worked for getting to that show. I’ve found other regions’ Netflix to have more content than my own so that’s what I use it for and it works fine.
Surfshark always caused my laptop to drop the internet connection. I tried to fix the problem myself. Then I went to the tech reps — who were always nice — for help. Finally, after 3 months, I had had enough and wanted a prorated refund. “No deal,” they said. Is that standing by your product?
I had bookmarked this review (possibly from when I was researching VPNs?) so now that I’m here here’s my two cents. I’ve been using Surfshark for a few months now and I’m happy with the provider I chose. It works nearly flawlessly on my computer, on my phone I have to connect to a different server to find a faster one sometimes. It’s not really a bother because that only takes a minute. I download the occasional torrent when I can’t find where to watch something so it works for both purposes. We have really fast internet at home and there’s little change with Surfshark on, the speed maybe goes down a little but not enough to really notice. And there’s the added bonus of it being a cheaper option from what I’ve seen. All in all – not planning on switching providers anytime soon.
My whole family uses the same account and we keep on adding on more people since there’s no device limit. Ended up being really cheap this way and haven’t heard any complaints from anyone yet. I use it for streaming on Netflix and my new fave Discovery+, had to reconnect to a different server maybe 2 times over the past few months, not a bother
I locked in 2 years of Surfshark several months ago. Without the VPN running I clock around 240 Mbps. Connecting to France and England, I am lucky to get 5Mbps. Usually it’s in the 1.2 to 2Mbps range. Barely adequate for streaming…I get a lot of interruptions when streaming. It doesn’t matter when I connect, or which city/server I connect to. I’m guessing they are overburdening their servers. It’s a cheap service, but no way are you going to consistently get 50Mbps to Europe.
After a great deal of research I chose Surfshark, mainly for two reasons: Price and location outside of U.S/E.U. jurisdiction. I have had service since May 2020 and have used customer service several times both via chat and email. I have also had occasion to request and receive refunds more than once and had no questions asked and refunded $ received in just a couple days! It is possible to communicate with the same rep. over multiple emails and chats just by asking for them by name. I paid the .99 per month to get enhanced private search called Blind Search and Hack Alert. I have found I encounter noticeably fewer ads with Blind Search then with the Clean Web feature which is included with the regular package. I have accessed Netflix UK, Canada and Austrailia without issue. From what I have read in comparisons like this article Surfshark offers the biggest bang for the VPN buck and they regularly offer additional savings as well as a “refer a friend” program that gives you free months for referrals. Overall I would definitely recommend Surfshark to a friend, (even without the incentive).
It covered all the features I was looking for: speed, a sufficient number of server locations, and a good price. Another perk I got together with the VPN was an ad-blocker, which I needed but definitely didn’t expect to get in a package with a VPN. Kudos to them.
Quite happy that after a long search, I decided to go with this VPN. It’s has a good price/performance relationship. Everything works as it was promised on their website. I do sometimes get inconsistent speeds, but I’m pretty sure that not something uncommon with other providers as well.
I use this VPN for multiple reasons. Of course, starting with security, and later on, moving to leisure activities such as streaming and gaming. So far, this VPN’s been pretty good in terms of speed and features. Don’t have many negative things to say about it. I have to admit that I did have a couple of hiccups here and there, but it was nothing I couldn’t fix myself somehow. And let’s be real, I haven’t heard about a VPN provider yet that didn’t have any issues whatsoever — all in all, a pretty decent choice to consider.
SurfSharkVPN is the best I have tried and I can show anyone who doubts me I am on 200mbps internet speed and with SurfSharkVPN I get between 210mbps and 230mbps and has never failed me in speed so I am very happy with my choice to go with them.
If you are looking to mostly torrent and stream, then it does the job. But even then speed is not as stable as ExpressVPN. Loading times and download speeds can sometimes slow down to noticeable levels.
If you are a power user looking for more then I’d recommend another service. The split tunnel (app whitelister) on Windows is also quite buggy and causes the Surfshark software to require a reinstallation.
Additionally I’ve noticed getting more capchas through Surfshark than on Nord or Express, perhaps due to them only having 1700+ servers (as of writing this review).
I was able to cancel their auto-renew on first day (which I found strange that it requires contacting their customer service for) and get a refund one day before expiration on their Live Chat without issues, so customer support is fine.
I was searching for a VPN primarily for two reasons security and torrenting. The security part is covered, they don’t keep logs, and they have IKEv2/IPsec security protocol which I was hoping for. The torrenting part is also sorted since they support P2P traffic. I did experience a minor Internet speed drop, so they have 4 stars out of 5 from me.
I wanted a VPN for securely logging on to my bank site, or when I use a credit card to order something online. SurfShark did not work for ally.com, and some food ordering sites will either respond “403 Forbidden”, or you’ll get a message that something went wrong, if you get anything at all. Disconnecting the VPN will allow them to work without issues.
And if you need tech support, use the live chat; email tech support sucks because you’re not working with just one person, and they don’t always read back far enough to see what you’ve already attempted, so you go in circles with suggestions.
Just got a Surfshark subscription and wanted to share my experience using it. I’m pretty happy with my choice, it does indeed unlock Hulu for me (also I shared my account with a friend, and she said it also unlocks HBO Max on her MacBook Air). The price is low, strong encryption protocols, no logs, I have to say it’s a good deal for such a small price.
Be warned this service does not work with all routers
If you’re from the UK and use BT internet and want the ADVERTISED benefits that Surfshark states in it’s sales blurb of access to wider Netflix libraries then under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you purchase SurfShark, I did and have just thrown my money away.
I spent a couple of months trying to configure the SurfShark app on my TV changing this setting and that and then eventually contacted SurfShark’s customer support.
Having run through a number of other options they had to admit that the router supplied with BT Internet will not allow Surfshark to work and Netflix’s will always detect the Surfshark app and stop you watching ANY of it’s content irrespective of library.
As I purchased Surfshark to gain the ADVERTISED extra Netflix libraries and do not need or want any of it other services I requested a refund.
Oh no Surfshark customer support came out with the 30 day limit as they have with other purchasers and after extensive communications with them they still refuse to refund me, so they have my money and I have nothing.
The only thing they could suggest is that I go out and blow even more money buying another router which my ISP will not support.
Buyer beware!! Damn I wish I had read the 1 and 2 * reviews here first, it seems I’m not the first. Also what’s the betting I get another copy/paste answer from their “customer services department”
Surfshark don’t refund. If you want to cancel your subscription, they try to convince you not… infinitely and never refund your credit card.
I
I payed for the 2 year membership because it had a 30day money-back guarantee. I used it for 2 days and it would not download any videos through Kodi (which is the reason I bought it). I switched back to the VPN I had been using and it went back to working fine. I emailed Surfshark and told them I wanted a refund 2 days ago. I received an email wanting me to explain the problem, which I did, and I didn’t get a refund. I sent another email that afternoon and got the exact same message. I replied to that and still haven’t heard anything back. I will now have to contact my credit card to have them do a charge back since this company apparently doesn’t respond to their refund guarantee. I would stay away from this company due to its shady practices. You have been warned!!
Well written, easy to understand and sounds like I might try it. Would like to see some comparisons with top VPNs. Thanks
Works fantasticly well for me and I would highly recommend it. I recently switched from Nord VPN that have gotten a bit pricey! Great service, great people, great product, great price all covered by a 30 day money back guarantee! Buy it!

i don’t like surfshark!!
I opted for this VPN after reading various good reviews. It’s east to use, fast and works with BBC when in Spain (I bought it to watch Wimbledon). I was using Hola which is free but it didn’t work with iPlayer.
Thanks so much for this review. Aimee, on behalf of comparitech, covered all aspects of this VPN and helped me decide on the VPN that is best for my usage. And she did so without showing any bias and by being very objective with her comments.
Without this review I would have had a more difficult time choosing a VPN so kudos to Aimee.
Sincerely,
Ed
