As you’ve likely discovered, if you’ve tried to watch TSN live online while away on vacation, it is not available outside Canada. When opening a video, the following message appears:
“Content not available for viewing in your region.”
Luckily, there’s a pretty simple workaround. We show you how to watch TSN in the USA or anywhere else outside Canada simply by connecting to a VPN with Canadian servers.
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) can be used to increase your online security and access geo-restricted content from other countries. VPNs send your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a VPN server somewhere else in the world, which lets you spoof your location. For instance, by connecting to a Canadian server, you’ll receive a Canadian IP address, which makes sites like TSN believe you are inside the country and allows you to watch from abroad.
In this article we’ll explain exactly how to use a VPN to access TSN and TSN GO from the US (or anywhere else), and we’ll list the best VPNs for the task. We’ll go into detail about each of the providers we recommend later on, but in case you don’t have time to read the full article, we’ll start with a quick summary:

Methodology: How we chose the best VPNs for streaming TSN
There are a lot of things to consider if you’re trying to find a VPN for streaming sports. After all, every provider differs in terms of speed, security, and functionality. We’ve thought carefully about which characteristics are most important in this instance and used these to separate the best from the rest. Here are the key areas we focused on when finding the best VPNs for TSN:
- Canadian servers: Since TSN (and most other Canadian streaming platforms) require you to have a Canadian IP address, these are mandatory. We look for providers with lots of servers in Canada, ideally in a few different cities, since this ensures that there’ll always be a suitable server relatively close by.
- Speed and reliability: Slow speeds can cause you to miss crucial moments of the action, so we’ve decided only to recommend services that perform well in our regular VPN speed testing. Crucially, it’s not just the speed that matters but also the consistency since unstable connections benefit nobody.
- Streaming potential: It’s not just TSN—we also check to see whether services are able to securely access platforms like Netflix, Disney Plus, and Crave TV. This way, you’ll always have options when it comes to what you watch.
- Security and privacy: We’re big proponents of digital privacy, which means no-logging policies are non-negotiable. However, our top VPNs must also use 256-bit encryption, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, and a kill switch to hide your traffic from snoopers.
- Devices: Everyone uses the internet differently, so you want a VPN that works with a variety of devices. We look for providers that support major operating systems like Windows, MacOS, Android, and iOS at a minimum. We also like providers that offer browser extensions.
- Ease of use: You shouldn’t have to be a tech whizz to protect yourself online, that’s why we like providers that have easy to use, intuitive apps and knowledgable customer service on hand if you need extra help.
- Price: We see a lot of VPNs here, so it’s very easy to tell when one is charging more than it’s really worth. Not only are all of the VPNs above fairly priced, but they also offer money-back guarantees and regular discounts throughout the year.
Our testing doesn’t stop here! Check out our full methodology post to find out all the ways we put VPNs through their paces.
Using a free VPN to watch TSN abroad
We know it’s tempting to try and watch TSN with a free VPN but, unfortunately, most free VPNs are terrible when it comes to streaming. That’s because they restrict your bandwidth in an attempt to manage their high number of users and small number of servers, resulting in poor speeds and plenty of buffering. In contrast, the best-paid VPNs for TSN have hundreds or even thousands of servers and offer unlimited bandwidth, which is ideal for streaming as well as torrenting.
It’s worth knowing that while many free VPNs work with TSN, most struggle with larger streaming services such as Netflix and HBO. What’s more, free VPNs are often very light on features. While not all features are essential, some free VPNs lack vital security features, including encryption and a kill switch. What’s more, your data and activity may be logged and sold to third parties. If you want privacy, it’s best to avoid free VPNs.
That being said, if you’re set on trying to watch TSN with a free VPN, here are some tips on how to do so safely.
How to watch TSN abroad with a VPN for free:
- Choose a VPN that offers a free trial. These range from 1-7 days, so it might be enough if you just want to watch one show or are only going away for a few days.
- Make the most of the money-back guarantees of the VPNs we’ve listed above. They range from 30-45 days, so they should cover you for a vacation or short work trip. Unlike a free trial you do need to make a payment upfront but, if you’re not 100% happy you can claim a full refund. Check out our article on how to cancel a NordVPN subscription to see how simple the process is.
Watching TSN outside of Canada: FAQs
What can I watch on TSN?
Unsurprisingly, TSN focuses on sports-related content. This includes live and recorded broadcasts of a wide range of sports.
In particular, TSN has 41 Toronto Raptors games for the 2024-25 NBA season. Basketball fans can also expect plenty of games featuring US-based teams, live coverage of NBA All-Star Weekend, and games from the NBA Playoffs.
When it comes to the NHL, TSN holds the regional broadcasting rights for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, and Winnipeg Jets for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
There are also sports talk shows, TSN original programming, and podcasts. Here’s a list of just some of the sports covered by TSN:
What is TSN GO?
TSN GO is TSN’s mobile app, which allows users to watch all its content while on the move. Download the app for iOS or Android and stream your favorite sports from anywhere.
Can I watch TSN on Roku?
Unfortunately, TSN doesn’t actually have a built-in Roku app. However, it does offer apps for Xbox consoles, Apple TV, and some Samsung Smart TVs.
There is a workaround, though. You can stream TSN on your phone or tablet and simply cast it to your Roku device. There may be a small amount of lag, but without access to official apps, this could be the only way for you to watch your favorite sports on the big screen.
Is it legal to use a VPN to watch TSN abroad?
Fortunately, it’s legal to use a VPN to watch TSN abroad. TSN’s Terms and Conditions state that it “makes no representation or warranty that the Service is appropriate or available for use at any locations outside Canada.”
We already know that TSN isn’t available outside Canada due to geographic restrictions, so there’s nothing new there. And although it reserves “the right to cancel, terminate, restrict, or suspend your access to the Service…”, this is highly unlikely to occur for using a VPN.
At worst, you may find that the VPN IP address you use with TSN ends up blacklisted. In this case, you’d simply connect to a different server to change your IP address (and clear your cookies so TSN forgets your previous IP address and location). That’s it!
What is TSN+?
Launched in January 2023, TSN+ is TSN’s stand-alone streaming service. With it, you can watch a wide range of sports including the NBA and NHL. It also offers some extras not available on TSN’s main channels such as NFL RedZone and PGA Tour Live.
A TSN+ subscription costs CAD $8 a month or $80 a year. However, it’s only available in Canada so if you do travel abroad, you’ll need to connect to a VPN server in Canada for a Canadian IP address to unblock it.
