watch TSN online live outside Canada, in the USA, with a VPN

Quick Summary
In Short

  • TSN is normally only accessible from within Canada.
  • With a VPN, you can spoof your location, helping you access TSN and other Canadian platforms regardless of where you are in the world.
  • We’ve personally tested dozens of leading VPNs to see which are best for streaming TSN abroad.
  • NordVPN is our top recommendation for TSN. It’s quick, reliable, and easy to use, plus it works with virtually every streaming service out there.

If you try to watch TSN while traveling outside of Canada, you’ll be met with the following error: “Content not available for viewing in your region”. That’s because, like most major streaming platforms, TSN is geographically restricted. There is a simple workaround, though: if you connect to a Canadian VPN server, you’ll be able to unblock TSN from anywhere in the world.

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs, for short) are first and foremost, privacy tools. They encrypt your web traffic, preventing it from being read by hackers, hotspot owners, or your ISP. However, they also route your traffic through servers in other countries, making it seem like you’re in another location entirely and letting you access your favorite geo-blocked services abroad.

We’ll explain how to unblock TSN outside Canada using a VPN and recommend the best services for the job. For now, here’s a quick guide to our top VPNs for TSN:

Best VPNs for watching TSN abroad

  3. IPVanish: Delivers first-class speeds, allows any number of connections, and works perfectly with several Canadian streaming services. Also boasts strong security and 24/7 support.

So, if you’re wondering how we chose the best VPNs to watch TSN online outside Canada, here’s a list of the key criteria they had to meet to be selected:

  • Servers in Canada capable of unblocking TSN – the more, the better

  • Protects your privacy with a no-logs policy
  • The ability to secure multiple devices simultaneously

NordVPN is our number-one choice for watching TSN in the USA or anywhere else outside of Canada. In particular, it has a vast network of over 7,000 servers, some 300+ of which are located across three cities in Canada. Aside from being able to access TSN and TSN GO securely, NordVPN works with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer. It also works with all of the favorite sports streaming platforms like Sky Sports, ESPN, beIN Sports, and others. This VPN offers various specialty servers, including some that are optimized for P2P file-sharing. There’s also the option of a Double VPN connection for extra privacy.

High speeds aren’t everything, but they do have a pretty large impact on your experience. That’s why we regularly test and retest VPNs to make sure we’re giving the most representative view of their speeds at any given moment. For instance, we tested NordVPN’s Canadian servers at three times throughout the day; here are the results.

NordVPN exceeded 190 Mbps in two of its three tests, but one slightly slower result brought its average speed down to 183.27 Mbps. That’s still exceptional, but with a little more consistency, it could be even better. Needless to say, this VPN is capable of handling tasks like watching TSN without batting an eye.

You can use NordVPN on up to 10 devices simultaneously. Support is available 24/7 over live chat. However, this VPN’s apps and browser extensions are simple to use, so you shouldn’t have any problems. NordVPN ensures your privacy with 256-bit AES encryption, a kill switch, protection from DNS and IPv6 leaks, and a strict no-logs policy. There’s also a built-in ad-blocker and malware scanner for even greater protection.

NordVPN apps are available for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, and Android TV. You can also download browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox. Manual installation is required for routers.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want a choice of over 300 consistent high-speed servers in Canada for TSN live streaming without buffering.
  • You need to securely access multiple Canadian streaming services, including Netflix Canada, CBC, and Crave, as well as international ones.
  • You prefer a VPN with specialty servers optimized for streaming and P2P, ensuring reliable performance.
  • You need a strong, privacy-focused VPN that has been independently audited to confirm its no-logs policy.

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You want highly customizable protocols, NordVPN offers WireGuard (NordLynx) but doesn’t allow deep protocol customization.

BEST VPN FOR TSN:NordVPN is our top choice for watching TSN in the US or anywhere. Over 300 servers in Canada for watching TSN and Canadian Netflix. Provides 24/7 live chat support. Beginner-friendly apps and strong security with encryption and a no-logs policy. Try it risk-free, thanks to its 30-day money-back guarantee.

Surfshark is a great-value VPN based in the British Virgin Islands. Despite being a relative newcomer, it has risen to become one of the most popular VPNs in the world. This is no surprise because it is cheap, reliable, and extremely versatile. It also lets you connect an unlimited number of devices with a single account, which means you can share the account with friends and family.

Screenshot showing Surfshark's main screen and connection details
This VPN has multiple Canadian servers and its main page lets you see important info about your connection at a glance

Despite its low price point, Surfshark has historically been one of the fastest VPNs on the market. Still, we wanted to see how quick its Canadian servers were, specifically. With this in mind, our experts performed three tests at varying times of day and recorded the results in the chart below:

With an average speed of 191.26 Mbps and less than 6 Mbps of variance across multiple tests, Surfshark isn’t just the fastest service we tried, it’s also one of the most consistent. Users will be able to live stream TSN, make video calls, and torrent without the slightest performance hiccup.

Servers are located in 100+ countries, including a choice of servers in Canada (Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver). Those servers run on diskless RAM and are bare-metal to ensure the best privacy levels available on the market. It is also a no-logs VPN that never retains any information about what its users do online. Surfshark VPN works great with The Sports Network, beIN sports, and others, so you can always catch the big sports events from wherever you are as long as you have an internet connection.

In terms of security, the VPN is solid. It implements robust AES 256 encryption (OpenVPN protocol), DNS leak protection, obfuscation, malware filtering, adblocking, and a No Borders mode to help you access the internet in countries like China. It also implements WireGuard, which makes it lightning-fast for streaming TSN, CBC, Netflix US, Hulu, and other popular services.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want a budget-friendly VPN that performs like a premier VPN.
  • You want the VPN we found to have the fastest and most consistent speeds
  • You want a VPN with unlimited simultaneous connections, perfect for families or sharing with friends.
  • You want access to NoBorders mode, which helps in restricted regions and bypasses stubborn firewalls.

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You rely on 24/7 customer support with instant responses; the live chat can sometimes be slow.

BEST BUDGET OPTION:Surfshark has servers in over 100 countries, including Canada. Works with popular streaming services such as Netflix and TSN. Unlimited simultaneous connections. Lots of advanced features. Has 24/7 live chat support available. Comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

IPVanish is a fast and reliable VPN ideal for accessing TSN from anywhere. It recently expanded its network to over 2,400 servers in 100+ countries, including a choice of three locations in Canada—Montreal, Vancouver, and Toronto.

Screenshot showing IPVanish's Canadian servers
IPVanish has a large presence in Canada, and you can see the current load of any individual server, meaning it’s easy to get a high-speed, low-latency connection

Let’s talk about speed. IPVanish has historically been a pretty strong performer thanks to its WireGuard support and 10 Gbps servers. Our team ran speed tests on the Canadian servers using a 250 Mbps connection, at three times of day. Here’s how this provider held up to the competition:

With all tests complete, IPVanish had an average speed of 142.71 Mbps. That’s significantly more than the 25 Mbps needed to stream 4K video without interruption, so watching TSN outside of Canada won’t be an issue. In fact, you can even use this service for tasks like torrenting, playing games, or making video calls.

This service keeps you safe using 256-bit AES encryption, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, a new threat protection feature, and a professionally verified no-logs policy. IPVanish also offers split tunneling functionality, data obfuscation, and automatic protection tools, as well as the ability to block local traffic entirely. In addition, It recently introduced an Advanced Tier, where, for around $1 more a month, users get 1 TB of cloud storage and access to a secure server.

IPVanish has its own MacOS, Windows, Android, iOS, and Amazon Fire TV apps. You can also follow manual setup instructions to get it running on most home routers. Its apps are intuitive and easy to use, but should you have any issues, support staff are on hand at all times via live chat.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want a choice of servers in multiple Canadian cities (Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto) for a reliable TSN connection.
  • You want unlimited simultaneous connections.
  • You like granular server selection, with the ability to pick servers with the lowest load for optimal speeds.
  • You need a VPN that works well with Kodi and Firestick, particularly for watching TSN on streaming devices.

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You’re concerned about privacy, as IPVanish is based in the US (a Five Eyes country).
  • You want the ability to pay in Bitcoin.

NO CONNECTION LIMIT:IPVanish is absurdly fast and can secure every device you own. Continually improving its service by introducing new privacy tools and growing its server network. Annual plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee.

ExpressVPN is great for unblocking region-locked content from all around the world. That’s because it has a network of over 3,000 servers. Even more impressive, these servers are spread across 100+ countries. With strong unblocking ability, ExpressVPN lets you watch TSN and TSN GO outside Canada and securely access other services like RDS and Crave. ExpressVPN has fast and reliable servers, so you’ll be able to stream without interruption.

Screenshot of ExpressVPN's Threat Manager options
ExpressVPN recently introduced a Threat Manager feature capable of blocking ads, trackers, and shady sites automatically

When it comes to performance, ExpressVPN is one of the most reliable options out there. However, most testing focuses exclusively on its American servers. Instead, we ran multiple speed tests to see how consistent its Canadian offering is. Let’s take a look at how it performed at different times of day:

The first thing you’ll notice is this provider’s results were all very close to one another. This led to an average speed of 128.92 Mbps — well above what you’d need to watch TV, free from buffering, stuttering, or any other interruptions. In short, ExpressVPN is a fantastic choice for anyone hoping to access TSN abroad.

If this is your first time using a VPN, you’re in good hands. ExpressVPN’s apps are very easy to use. What’s more, this VPN comes with 24/7 live chat and email support. Having tested this ourselves, we can say that it’s one of the best we’ve come across. ExpressVPN allows up to eight simultaneous connections, so you’re not limited to protecting just one device.

A quality VPN should not only allow you to watch TSN abroad, but it should also keep you safe online. ExpressVPN takes your security seriously, as shown by its use of 256-bit AES encryption. Further security features include a kill switch and protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks. Just as important, ExpressVPN accepts Bitcoin and doesn’t log any information that could identify you. As such, it’s a great option for privacy-conscious internet users.

Download ExpressVPN apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, and routers. Chrome and Firefox browser extensions are also available.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want one of the most reliable VPNs for streaming TSN, Netflix Canada, and other Canadian and international services.
  • You need strong privacy protections, including RAM-only servers and a proven no-logs policy.
  • You want consistent, high-speed performance across multiple devices, even on Smart TVs and gaming consoles.
  • You like a VPN with custom router firmware, making it ideal for whole-home VPN coverage.

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You’re looking for a budget VPN
  • You want dedicated streaming servers labeled for TSN or Netflix

IMPRESSIVE SPEEDS:ExpressVPN is a solid choice. It’s fast and reliable servers in Canada allow for lag-free streaming of TSN. Includes 24/7 live chat support and offers beginner-friendly apps and browser extensions. It even includes a 30-day money-back guarantee.

CyberGhost has hundreds of servers across three Canadian cities (Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver), making it ideal for watching TSN as you travel. It stands out for its high-speed connections, which allow you to stream free from lag or buffering. In total, it has a network of more than 11,000 servers in 100+ countries. Indeed, it even works with Netflix US and BBC iPlayer. If you have lots of devices, note that you can use this VPN to connect up to seven devices simultaneously.

Screenshot showing CyberGhost's Candian server locations
This provider has lots of servers in Canada, as well as some specially optimized to access platforms like CBC and Netflix Canada abroad

We’ve monitored CyberGhost’s performance closely over the years. Previously, it was one of the top performers, though recently, its rivals have made dramatic improvements, and it’s struggled to keep up. Take a look below to see how fast its Canadian servers are at the time of writing:

This VPN achieved an average speed of 109.75 Mbps, which is quite impressive. However, you’ll notice that it delivered one particularly poor result. Without this, it would have an average that’s about 50 percent higher, so there’s definitely some work to be done where consistency is concerned. Regardless, even at its slowest, CyberGhost remains fast enough for 4K streaming.

One particularly attractive feature of CyberGhost is that it includes a 45-day money-back guarantee (most VPNs offer 30 days at most). The apps make it easy to select a server or activate various features such as the adblocker. Overall, CyberGhost has a very strong security offering with 256-bit AES encryption, ad-blocking, malware-scanning, an automatic kill switch, and DNS and IPv6 leak protection. This VPN service is based in Romania and has a strict no-logs policy.

You can use CyberGhost via the apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Amazon Fire Stick/Fire TV, and Android TV. Chrome and Firefox browser extensions are available. Linux and routers require manual configuration.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want a VPN with streaming-optimized Canadian servers explicitly labeled for TSN.
  • You need a beginner-friendly VPN with easy-to-use apps on all major devices.
  • You like a VPN with a generous 45-day money-back guarantee, longer than most competitors.
  • You prefer a VPN with one of the largest global networks (11,000+ servers).

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You want highly customizable settings and protocol control, this VPN is more user-friendly than technical.
  • You need constant high speeds, CyberGhost speeds were decent but inconsistent.

BEST BEGINNER VPN:CyberGhost is ideal for streaming TSN. Hundreds of Canadian servers, lets you connect up to seven devices, includes 24/7 support, and has apps that are easy for beginners to use. Secure with a no-logs policy. Has a 45-day money-back guarantee.

Private Internet Access is a US-based provider with over 35,000 servers. This includes servers in Canada that work to watch TSN and other Canadian TV platforms. It offers ideal speeds for streaming and can securely access Netflix US. Just bear in mind that it occasionally struggles with some US services like Hulu, so you may want to take it for a test run by using its 30-day money-back guarantee before committing permanently.

Screenshot of PIA's Mace feature
Private Internet Access has a ton of advanced features, but we’re big fans of its MACE tool, which blocks ads, trackers, and malware automatically

PIA is known for its extraordinarily large network, but we know from experience that network scale doesn’t always translate directly into higher speeds. To see how reliable its Canadian servers were, we tested them during the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon and charted the results. Take a look:

This provider delivered an average speed of 60.51 Mbps. As such, it’s a bit slower than the other VPNs we’ve seen on this list, but it is still fast enough for day-to-day browsing and streaming. If you’re hoping to unblock TSN and are interested in customizing your connection settings, PIA would be a fantastic choice.

One of the best things about PIA VPN is that it lets you connect unlimited devices simultaneously. This represents great value for families or those who own many devices. If you have any trouble, this US-based provider offers live chat support, which is available 24/7.

In terms of security, you get robust AES encryption and a lot of customizability. It also has a no-logs policy, which has been proven in court. The apps have a kill switch, DNS leak protection, Shadowsocks for obfuscation, and split tunneling. Also, this VPN permits torrenting, and it recently introduced WireGuard to give it even better speeds. Apps are available for all popular platforms.

Buy this VPN if:

  • You want highly customizable VPN settings, including adjustable encryption and protocol options.
  • You need a VPN with a massive server network, including numerous Canadian options.
  • You prefer a VPN that includes a built-in ad-blocker for enhanced browsing security.

Don’t buy this VPN if:

  • You want a VPN based outside of the Five Eyes alliance, as PIA is headquartered in the US.
  • You prefer a VPN with a simple, beginner-friendly interface—PIA is better for advanced users.

ADVANCED SECURITY OPTIONS:A fast and reliable VPN with AES encryption and a kill-switch. Works to stream Canadian TV abroad. Servers in 90+ countries. Allows torrenting. Split tunneling feature. Has a 30-day money-back guarantee.

This provider’s speeds never fell below 50 Mbps, and it averaged 53.54 Mbps. In real terms, this means that you can queue up two 4K videos and not even notice any performance issues. PrivateVPN is a solid choice for everyday usage, though if lots of people share your internet connection, you may want to consider a speedier alternative.

The live chat support provided by PrivateVPN is excellent and lets you speak directly with the developers. PrivateVPN is headquartered in Sweden and provides security with 256-bit AES encryption, DNS leak protection, and a kill switch. There’s also a no-logs policy and the option to pay in Bitcoin for enhanced anonymity.

Methodology: How we chose the best VPNs for streaming TSN

There are a lot of things to consider if you’re trying to find a VPN for streaming sports. After all, every provider differs in terms of speed, security, and functionality. We’ve thought carefully about which characteristics are most important in this instance and used these to separate the best from the rest. Here are the key areas we focused on when finding the best VPNs for TSN:

Speed

This is one of the most important things to consider if you’re thinking about using a VPN to stream TSN. Slow speeds cause all kinds of problems, from live streams that pause constantly to choppy, low-resolution video. As such, we conduct extensive VPN speed testing to make sure that the services we recommend are actually capable of delivering an enjoyable viewing experience.

This involves testing each VPN’s Canadian servers at three times of day (morning, noon, and afternoon) to get an overall average speed. These are then normalized, with the fastest provider earning a perfect 10 out of 10 score. Take a look below to see how the best VPNs for TSN compared:

Surfshark was the top performer here, narrowly beating NordVPN. However, every provider we tested was capable of streaming 4K video without any issues. Be aware that the speeds you actually get might vary if your connection is slower than ours (we had a 250 Mbps base connection).

Network suitability

Technically, any VPN with one server in Canada could theoretically unblock TSN. However, larger networks tend to suffer less from congestion during peak times and make it harder for streaming platforms to identify and blacklist their servers.

That’s why we considered several key factors, like how many locations each VPN offers in Canada, how many servers are in each location, how large the overall network is, and whether the VPN can reliably access other popular streaming platforms. We then assigned points based on how our top services performed. See for yourself:

NordVPN earned the highest score here, an impressive 8.9. We appreciated its expansive network, variety of Canadian server locations, and unparalleled ability to unblock major streaming services. PrivateVPN sat on the other end of the scale due to its much smaller network and the fact that it sometimes struggles to access popular streaming apps.

Security and privacy

The primary goal of any VPN is to keep you safe and secure online. With this in mind, we created a strict list of requirements that any potential recommendation must meet. These include having a no-logging policy, unbreakable encryption, a kill switch, and leak protection. However, all in all, we evaluated providers on what they had to offer in 16 individual areas. You’ll find all of these (and how our top VPNs stacked up) in the table below:

Scores were assigned by awarding every VPN a perfect score and deducting points for every area where they could be improved. Once this process was complete, we created an easily-readable chart to show the differences between providers:

We have a two-way tie for first place between NordVPN and Surfshark. The former could improve some areas of its authentication, while Surfshark lost points due to being based in a Nine Eyes country. Still, thanks to its proven zero-logs policy, this isn’t a huge issue and shouldn’t impact your privacy in any meaningful way.

Ease of use

Our goal is to ensure that everyone has access to digital privacy tools and, more importantly, understands the ways in which they are (and are not) protected while using them. For that reason, we prioritize VPNs with clearly-labeled settings, access to live chat-based customer support and a strong focus on ease of use. With all data collected, we assigned scores based on what each VPN did to simplify day-to-day usage.

NordVPN and PIA both scored an outstanding 9.6, thanks to their general versatility, expansive support libraries, and 24/7 customer support. However, this was a tough category, especially since each of our top VPNs offers apps for all major platforms and works with TSN.

Value for money

We don’t want you to pay more than the bare minimum for a high-quality VPN. This doesn’t mean we just recommend the cheapest services, though. Instead, we carefully look at what each provider offers to make sure its price is justified, then hunt down student discounts, long-term deals, and free trials, among other things (see the table below). There is one non-negotiable: to be included in our list, VPNs must offer a money-back guarantee of at least 30 days.

Surfshark delivered the highest score here, earning 9.7 points of a possible 10. IPVanish wasn’t far behind, actually sharing several of the key factors that secured Surfshark the top spot. For instance, both VPNs allow an unlimited number of connections, offer low-cost subscriptions, and work with most streaming apps.

Using a free VPN to watch TSN abroad

We know it’s tempting to try to watch TSN with a free VPN, but, unfortunately, most free VPNs are terrible when it comes to streaming. That’s because they restrict your bandwidth in an attempt to manage their high number of users and small number of servers, resulting in poor speeds and plenty of buffering. In contrast, the best-paid VPNs for TSN have hundreds or even thousands of servers and offer unlimited bandwidth, which is ideal for streaming as well as torrenting.

It’s worth knowing that while many free VPNs work with TSN, most struggle with larger streaming services such as Netflix and HBO. What’s more, free VPNs are often very light on features. While not all features are essential, some free VPNs lack vital security features, including encryption and a kill switch. What’s more, your data and activity may be logged and sold to third parties. If you want privacy, it’s best to avoid free VPNs.

That being said, if you’re set on trying to watch TSN with a free VPN, here are some tips on how to do so safely.

How to watch TSN abroad with a VPN for free:

  • Choose a VPN that offers a free trial. These range from 1-7 days, so it might be enough if you just want to watch one show or are only going away for a few days.
  • Make the most of the money-back guarantees of the VPNs we’ve listed above. They range from 30-45 days, so they should cover you for a vacation or short work trip. Unlike a free trial, you do need to make a payment upfront, but if you’re not 100% happy, you can claim a full refund. Check out our article on how to cancel a NordVPN subscription to see how simple the process is.

Watching TSN outside of Canada: FAQs

What can I watch on TSN?

Unsurprisingly, TSN focuses on sports-related content. This includes live and recorded broadcasts of a wide range of sports.

In particular, TSN has 41 Toronto Raptors games for the 2024-25 NBA season. Basketball fans can also expect plenty of games featuring US-based teams, live coverage of NBA All-Star Weekend, and games from the NBA Playoffs.

When it comes to the NHL, TSN holds the regional broadcasting rights for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, and Winnipeg Jets for the upcoming 2024-25 season.

There are also sports talk shows, TSN original programming, and podcasts. Here’s a list of just some of the sports covered by TSN:

What is TSN GO?

TSN GO is TSN’s mobile app, which allows users to watch all its content while on the move. Download the app for iOS or Android and stream your favorite sports from anywhere.

Can I watch TSN on Roku?

Unfortunately, TSN doesn’t actually have a built-in Roku app. However, it does offer apps for Xbox consoles, Apple TV, and some Samsung Smart TVs.

There is a workaround, though. You can stream TSN on your phone or tablet and simply cast it to your Roku device. There may be a small amount of lag, but without access to official apps, this could be the only way for you to watch your favorite sports on the big screen.

Is it legal to use a VPN to watch TSN abroad?

Fortunately, it’s legal to use a VPN to watch TSN abroad. TSN’s Terms and Conditions state that it “makes no representation or warranty that the Service is appropriate or available for use at any locations outside Canada.”

We already know that TSN isn’t available outside Canada due to geographic restrictions, so there’s nothing new there. And although it reserves “the right to cancel, terminate, restrict, or suspend your access to the Service…”, this is highly unlikely to occur for using a VPN.

At worst, you may find that the VPN IP address you use with TSN ends up blacklisted. In this case, you’d simply connect to a different server to change your IP address (and clear your cookies so TSN forgets your previous IP address and location). That’s it!

What is TSN+?

Launched in January 2023, TSN+ is TSN’s stand-alone streaming service. With it, you can watch a wide range of sports including the NBA and NHL. It also offers some extras not available on TSN’s main channels such as NFL RedZone and PGA Tour Live.

A TSN+ subscription costs CAD $8 a month or $80 a year. However, it’s only available in Canada so if you do travel abroad, you’ll need to connect to a VPN server in Canada for a Canadian IP address to unblock it.
