Netflix might be available almost everywhere, but there are often significant differences between what people can actually watch. For instance, the Canadian library has nearly 6,700 titles while others have less than 1,000. Traveling can be stressful at the best of times, so below, we’ll explain how to stream Netflix Canada during a trip abroad.
Netflix uses your IP address to determine your location, so regaining access to Netflix CA is as simple as finding a VPN with Canadian servers and the ability to avoid detection. Better still, VPNs encrypt your data, hiding your online activity from public hotspot owners, local ISPs, and the government.
How to securely access Canadian Netflix from anywhere in the world
Setting up a VPN connection is simpler than you might think and should only take a few minutes. Just follow the step-by-step guide below, and you’ll be streaming Netflix Canada in minutes.
Here’s how to access Canadian Netflix from anywhere:
- First, sign up for one of our recommended VPNs (we particularly recommend NordVPN).
- Download and install the VPN. Usually, you’ll be allowed at least five connections at once, so you might as well install it on any device you use frequently.
- Log into Netflix. If you leave this step until later, you’ll likely be told that your password is incorrect, even when you type it correctly
- Connect to one of your VPN’s Canadian servers. This will get you a Canadian IP address, and Netflix will update its library to match.
- Go back to Netflix, refresh the page, and try playing something. If you see a proxy error or can’t find your favorite shows, clear your cookies, try a different server, or ask your VPN’s support team for more in-depth help.

Methodology: How we found the best VPNs for Netflix Canada
Our previous research analyzed how well major VPNs work with Netflix and concluded that the vast majority don’t work with Netflix Canada. Of course, we also have to ensure they’re fast and secure enough to handle anything else you throw at them. That’s why we used the criteria below to find the best VPNs for Netflix CA:
- Netflix potential: Naturally, our top VPNs had to work with Canadian Netflix. However, we also checked to see if they granted access on both mobile and desktop devices. Additionally, we looked for VPNs that were able to securely access lots of other regional libraries.
- Other streaming capabilities: Most people are subscribed to several streaming services. That’s why we tested our recommendations with lots of Canadian channels, including Crave, TSN, and Global TV.
- Server availability: If your VPN has few Canadian servers, your closest could be hundreds of miles away, which can have a real impact on your streaming speeds. We prioritized VPNs with a large presence in Canada, ideally spread across several cities.
- Performance: Netflix’s guidelines recommend at least 25 Mb/s for 4K streaming, so high speeds are vital. We keep a close eye on the top providers’ performance with periodic speed testing and only recommend the best.
- Security and privacy: VPNs must offer 256-bit encryption, a kill switch, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, and a no-logs policy. This is just a baseline, though, and we welcome any more advanced security features a provider might offer.
- Usability: We don’t think anyone should have to compromise on digital privacy. As such, we only recommend services that are beginner-friendly, with apps for a wide range of devices, and live chat-based customer support.

Canadian Netflix: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I watch Netflix Canada with a free VPN?
It’s important to note that while you may be able to stream Canadian Netflix with a free VPN, we strongly advise against doing so. There are several reasons for this, not least that free services tend to struggle with major streaming platforms. With fewer servers yet more users than their paid rivals, free VPNs usually only offer very slow speeds, which makes for laggy, choppy video.Â
There are security concerns, too. We’ve seen supposed “zero logs” VPNs inadvertently leak detailed databases of information online, and there’s no easy way to tell if you’re using a service that contains malware or not. For the highest level of protection, we recommend using a reputable no-logs VPN instead of a free service. Â
What can I watch on Canadian Netflix?
Canadian Netflix subscribers have access to a huge selection of titles and a surprisingly large selection of content that’s not available in any other regional Netflix libraries. Here are a few of the TV shows and movies that are exclusive to Netflix Canada:Â
- Cascade
- Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
- Â A Little White Lie
- Maybe I Do
- November
- Blood Quantum
- The Immaculate Room
- Sam & Kate
- Press Play
- Cowboys
Will Netflix ban me for using a VPN?
Technically, Netflix has the right to ban you for any reason. However, there haven’t been reports of Netflix banning people from using a VPN. It’s also worth noting it’s not illegal to use a VPN in most countries. The worst that’s likely to happen is you’ll be asked to disconnect the VPN before streaming.Â
Does Netflix offer a free trial in Canada?
Unfortunately, Netflix has phased out its free trials and no longer offers them anywhere. Still, basic plans start at $9.99 CAD per month, and you can reduce this to $6.99 monthly if you’re willing to put up with ads, so it’s far from the most expensive streaming service on the market.
Why doesn't my VPN work with Netflix?
Netflix uses advanced technology to identify VPN connections and block them from accessing its content. The company can detect when a user is attempting to access Netflix from a VPN by looking at the IP address of their connection. If the IP address does not match one of the approved locations, then Netflix will automatically deny access.
Additionally, Netflix also looks at the server load, as a large number of connections from the same IP address can indicate that a user is using a VPN. In some cases, Netflix may temporarily block an entire IP address range if it detects suspicious activity. Don’t panic, though: we’ve written a post breaking down some of the easiest ways to fix Netflix VPN problems.
