Kodi is a popular media center software package. It’s capable of running on most popular devices including desktop PCs, iPhones, Amazon Fire TV, and even USB sticks, and is capable of legally accessing streams from a large number of websites, including Netflix. One of the best things about Kodi is its depth and ease of use; novices can quickly set up a basic media server or install streaming addons, but there’s enough complexity for experts to create more sophisticated setups.
Kodi is completely legal to use but has been blighted with negative press coverage thanks to third-party addons and piracy box sellers that provide unrestricted access to licensed content. Thanks to recent DRM updates, however, Kodi can now access a wider range of legal content that require accounts and login credentials, including Netflix. With that in mind, this guide will focus on installing Asciidisco’s legitimate Netflix addon.
Warning: Kodi should only be used for content to which you have the legal right to access. Neither the Kodi Foundation nor Comparitech advocates the use of Kodi for piracy.
Important: Always use a VPN with Kodi
A VPN will allow you to use Kodi privately, so your ISP and others can’t invade your privacy and see the sites you visit and the content you stream. But that’s not the only reason to use one.
A VPN is particularly useful tool for Netflix. Not only does it allow you to stream securely, but it’ll also let you regain access to your home country’s library during trips abroad.
We recommend ExpressVPN. It’s a fast VPN with servers in more than 90 different countries and exceptional security offering. Further, ExpressVPN is extremely portable, with dedicated apps for Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, and Android.

The Netflix addon can be installed on older versions of Kodi, but Kodi 18 offers a host of new features to enhance your experience. Android users can search for content using voice commands, for instance, while Windows users can install the 64-bit version to make full use of their computer’s hardware.
To get started, go to main downloads page and select the operating system you’d like to use. Depending on the platform you chose, you’ll see different options here. Windows and Android offer both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, while OS X only has one option.
Click the version you’d like to install. The installation should begin automatically and save to your designated downloads location.
For the most part, Kodi 18’s installer is identical to that of earlier versions. However, there is one very important change to make during this process. Kodi 18 has the same default installation location as earlier iterations. This means that by default, Kodi 18 will overwrite any earlier versions you have installed. You can keep Kodi 18 separate by installing it in a different location or simply changing the default folder name.
Note: as Kodi 18 uses the same profile folder as earlier versions, any settings you’ve changed will also be changed in a fresh install of Kodi 18. Your installed addons will also be present.
Installing the Netflix Kodi addon
Asciidisco’s Netflix addon was primarily designed with Android users in mind. It works with other platforms too, but there’s an additional step to take before it will work as intended. Below, we’ll explain how to install it on whichever platform you’re using.
Begin by downloading the Netflix addon. Make sure to save it somewhere memorable as you’ll have to locate it in a second. Open Kodi and click the Add-ons tab in the menu on the left. Next, click the box icon in the top-left of the screen and choose Install from zip file.
Navigate to the location where you saved the addon. Select it, and you should see a notification in the top-right telling you it installed correctly. If you’re on Android, all that’s left to do is login. Users on other platforms have to create a file in Kodi’s special://home directory, however. The problem is that this isn’t an actual location—it’s shorthand for a folder whose location changes based on the operating system you’re using. Let’s cover how to solve this problem.
Linking to the Widevine DRM file
Netflix uses Widevine Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology to prevent its content from being accessed by unauthorised viewers. In this step, we’ll be linking to a Widevine decryption library in order to allow us to access Netflix’s content via Kodi.
To begin, open a text editor like Notepad or TextEdit. The exact options you’ll see will differ based on the software you’re using but it should be fairly obvious which ones you need to choose.
Copy and paste everything from this page into a new document. Next, click Save As. Choose All files in the Save as type dropdown and name the file “libwidevine.sh”, without the quotation marks. Save this to your desktop for now; we’ll move it to the relevant folder in just a second.
Now we have to establish the actual location of special:// home on your system. Take a look at the list below and navigate to the relevant folder.
Windows: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Kodi
MacOS: /Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/Kodi
Linux: /home/[username]/.kodi
OpenELEC/LibreELEC: /storage/.kodi/
iOS: /private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/Kodi
Next, create a folder named “cdm”, without the quotation marks. Move the libwidevine.sh file you created earlier into this folder.
Using the Netflix Kodi addon
When you first open the Netflix addon, you’ll be prompted to enter your Netflix login credentials. However, you can switch between multiple accounts by going into the addon’s settings menu and choosing Switch accounts. If you have a preferred account, make sure to enable automatic login by highlighting the Auto Login tab and toggling the option that appears.
If you find that videos take a longer time to buffer or stutter, you’ll want to adjust the Inputstream Addon Settings under the Account tab. This allows you to change the maximum video resolution and bandwidth, hopefully providing a more consistent experience. We did encounter an issue wherein selecting this menu option caused all other settings text to disappear, but it should appear again the next time you open the menu.
You can also set up a PIN number in case you’d like to restrict access to adult content. It’s worth noting that even if you’ve set up parental controls on Netflix directly, this addon will not ask for a PIN unless one is set up in the settings menu. However, there are a few problems with this method. Firstly, the PIN can be reset by uninstalling and reinstalling the addon. Secondly, there seems to be no limit to how many tries a user has at entering the PIN. Third, sometimes the correct PIN number would register as incorrect. For these reasons, we recommend avoiding this feature entirely.
Most of the options on the main menu fail to load content. This shortcoming means that the Netflix Kodi addon isn’t ideal for people browsing for something new to watch. However, the search function works as intended. As such, you can search for a specific TV show or movie and watch it completely legally using this addon. All that’s left is to tack on a VPN service if you want to access your usual Netflix library during a trip abroad.
How to switch Netflix region on Kodi
With a VPN, it’s easy to change your Netflix region and access your regular Netflix library while traveling abroad. Just follow the steps below:
- First, sign up for a suitable VPN. We recommend ExpressVPN but NordVPN and CyberGhost are both strong, low-cost alternatives.
- Download and install the app, taking care to get the appropriate version for your device.
- Connect to a VPN server in your home country.
- Open Kodi and log into the Netflix addon.
- You should now be able to stream all of the Netflix titles you have access to back home.
Conclusion
The Netflix Kodi addon still has some bugs to work out but provides a wholly legal way to stream content via Kodi. That said, setting it up is just the beginning. We can also help you set up subtitles and solve any playback issues you might encounter.
Netflix is a great streaming platform, but it’s far from the only one. If you’re looking to expand the size of your content library, you might want to check out our guides to the best Kodi addons for anime, movies, live TV shows, and sports.
Tried to install this today on the current Leia build and getting python 3.0.0 dependency error.
Hi There,
thank you. This was really helpfull for me. With this addon Netflix works fine, instead of the kodinerds Addon that doesn’t work on Kodi v 18. Thank you very much.
On android kodi 18.5 there is only something called RTMP input and Netflix wont play anything.
Hi Ian, 10/19/2019
Man, first thanks for all the work you’ve put into this! I have the same problem everyone else seems to have with running the Netflix add-on in a fresh download and install of OSMC/Kodi (V18.3) on a Pi3b. Clean install and I cannot get the addon to run, it returns “Netflix error: check the log file for more information”. I manually created the CDM dir with the Mkdir command from the command line interface (took me a while to figure to learn enough Debian script to be able to navigate and create the correct directory and then copy the libwidevine.sh file into it using the file I built with notepad as you suggested), but no luck! I have been over all my steps a million times and i just can’t get this to work. Any help would be most appreciated!
Thanks, Chris
Hi Chris, thanks for reaching out. A lot of the problems seem to circle around Raspberry Pis, so I’ll dust mine off and try to find a workaround shortly. Thanks, Ian
I followed this and it all looked good. I logged into my account and could see my users and playlists, etc. I’m using a legit family account. But when I try and play a movie I get something about inputstream adaptive missing. I’ve googled this to death and everywhere shows a screenshot with this being a menu item. That doesn’t appear on my menu.
I followed this:
https://kodi.wiki/view/Add-on:InputStream_Adaptive
But “input stream” doesn’t appear on the menu.
I’m at a bit of a loss now.
Hi Andy, can I ask what operating system you’re using? On a Windows 10 PC, this option shows up at Addons > Download > VideoPlayer InputStream > Inputstream Adaptive – slightly different from what the wiki says. Thanks, Ian
Hi
Installed the Netflix app on Kodi 18. Works, but the audio on some shows are German. I checked my profiler and it is correct, in the US. I logged out and restarted Kodi, re logged in, with the same results.
No VPN
Any ideas?
Hi Ronald, we’ve actually seen this issue a few times. Can you try turning Kodi’s preferred audio language to English for me? That’s under Settings > Player > Language > Preferred audio language. Hope this helps, Ian
The app works well on my Android 7.1.2 but I need help getting the res higher than 540…any ideas on how to do that?
Hi Mark, some people are reporting that they fixed this issue by updating the InputStream Adaptive addon. To do this, click the Addons tab on Kodi’s home screen, choose Download at the bottom of the next page, then click on VideoPlayer InputStream and either install it or update it as needed. Hope this helps, Ian
First and foremost, thanks for the Addon.
The Addon works for my Netflix. I get Dolby Atmos and HDR, but kodi outputs the resolution at 480p not 4K,
Great tutorial! This method works flawlessly on freshly installed Raspberry Pi version of Kodi (RasPI 3 model B+ and LibreElec) For file management I used WinSCP. Also, I changed permissions for .sh script to 0777. BTW, Widevine installation is a bit problematic because it requires 2 gigs of free space on SD card and without it Netflix plugin doesn’t work.
Let me add that I am running
Kodi 18.3 on my NVIDIA Shield, via HDMI through my Samsung K950 Soundbar. Sony Z9D tv.
When in the Kodi media center under settings/ video
It reads 760×480 as the resolution,
Audio DD+ 6 channels (Dolby Atmos)
So ..im not getting the 4k resolution per that reading, which is odd because I’m getting HDR per the TV menu. I figure that I’m not getting Dolby Vision because the Nvidia Shield doesn’t output DV
Hi Mo, this issue seems to affect certain Android devices, and has something to do with Netflix’s DRM. Can you try playing a Netflix Original show like Orange is the New Black or Stranger Things to see if they’re 480p as well? Thanks, Ian
Hi there, trying to get this running on a blank slate Windows 10 machine. I am unable to login to my account, it always returns with an error to check my credentials. I’ve cross-checked that the login information is correct. Any ideas? Could it be an issue with me having created the .sh manually? In the comments I see that the add-on now does this automatically. In that case, would uninstalling the add-on be enough (or maybe simply deleting the .sh?) to get it working, or would I have to clear Kodi altogether?
Hi Nora, several people have reported this issue but we haven’t been able to nail down a specific reason as to why it happens. I suppose it’s possible that the .sh file could be responsible – you wouldn’t have to completely remove Kodi, just the addon and file you created. If the addon works properly after reinstallation, then the Widevine file was the issue all along. Hope this helps, Ian
Just my 2p worth – the .sh file when created under windows may have added characters to the end of file. Try using a text editor other than notepad
I followed the steps that you posted here. when I open NETFLIX the login page appears, even though I am enterning the correct username/password it says incorrect. please help me here.
Hi there, this is a fairly common problem but we’re not 100% sure why it happens as yet. Just out of interest, did you create the Widevine file manually or automatically? Thanks, Ian
Very good article, widevine installed by itself and I’m successfully logged in. However, while all the menus work and so does search, when I go to play something, i get a black screen. And no Audio. With one exception. Star Trek ( TOS) plays with audio, but random flashing colors on the screen. SO riddle me that…
Try turning off (or on if it’s already off) the hardware acceleration in player settings
Hi there, this is a really strange issue. If I had to guess, I’d say that Netflix is working properly and there’s something wrong with the way Kodi’s rendering the video. Hopefully, by changing the render method (Settings > Player > Video > Render Method) we can fix the problem. You might also want to try disabling hardware acceleration, just in case. Hope this helps, Ian
I don’t have any render settings. Might be because I’m running Libreelec on an RPI3. HOWEVER, disabling hardware acceleration on both players did the trick. Thank you.
ANdnow i have no sound. Oddly enough, youtube also has no sound but the rest of my video addons work fine.
Ok i uninstalled rmtp and the adaptive video stream thing and now everything works just fine again.
Hi Ian? Do you know if it’s possible to configure somewhere the default language and subs when playing a movie / episode? Right now, it is always German activated, it is a little pain xD.
Thanks for your time!
Hi Andrés, I’m not quite sure why this happens but it should be easy enough to fix. You can set your default Netflix language by logging into the website, clicking edit profile, and choosing “English”. You might also have to sign out and back in to make this take effect. Hope this helps, Ian
Don’t think my last post uploaded
Working great except when VPN in background
Any chance of fixing this please?
Hi Alan, can I ask which VPN you’re using? Also, which country’s Netflix library are you trying to access? Some VPNs work with Netflix in a browser but not via Kodi or a mobile device. Thanks, Ian
No probs
Tried NordVPN and ghostvpn. Both work in other apps etc with Netflix
It doesn’t matter which Netflix I’m trying to access. Even official one in U.K. which works fine without vpn enabled will not work even selecting a U.K. vpn
Hmm. Is this on a PC? Netflix uses GPS data to cross-reference your location with your IP address if you’re on a mobile device. It’s possible that there’s some kind of verification issue when using a VPN I couldn’t say for sure without fully examining the Widevine file and addon source code. Hopefully the developer will release a fix soon but until then, it doesn’t look like there’s any way around this problem. Ian
Thanks for the addon, it is awesome!
I have a question, is it possible to download the episodes to watch them offline, as in the official Netflix apps?
Hi Andrés, unfortunately, you can’t download shows with the Kodi addon. Perhaps the developer will add this feature in the future but there are no guarantees I’m afraid. Thanks, Ian
Eventually got this working on a mini pc running LibreELEC but won’t work with openvpn running regardless of location not even own country
Hi Ian!
I´m trying to install the add but it gives one error ” Failed to install a dependency” .
Do you know what this means?
Thanks in advance!
Hi Pedro, dependencies are other pieces of software that an addon needs to run. You should have been asked whether you wanted to install the Widevine file – I’m assuming you said yes and then this error appeared? Can I ask which operating system you’re using? Thanks, Ian
Hi Ian!
Already install the netflix addon.
Although now im struggling in where I must create a folder named “cdm”.
I´m using the Libreelec..
Hi Pedro, the addon has been updated recently and should now automatically install Widevine, so you shouldn’t actually have to create any folders. Can you check to see if the addon works as is? Thanks, Ian
Hi some shows are in german language. I can manually change to english but is there a way to fix this. Great addon though!
Hi Daniel, are you using a German VPN server? Also, can you check your account settings on the Netflix website and make sure that English is your default language? Thanks, Ian
Hi, thanks for this article.
I am trying to install Netflix on Kodi 18.1 on a RaspberryPi 2. I have found by searching the internet how to have the hidden folders (.kodi) visible in the Storage folder. However, I can not create a new folder “cdm” withing /storage/.kodi. The “New Folder” button on the right (Confluance Skin) is greyed out. I am Running LibreELEC. So I am stuck 🙁
use SSH commands to download the proper resources. This works but isn’t the best for raspberrypi 2 must lower the stream quality for it to handle the DRM.
Hi Theo, the addon was recently updated and should now install widevine automatically the first time you run it, without the need to create any new folders. If you’re still having problems, I’d be happy to try installing Netflix on my Raspberry Pi to see if there’s a workaround. Thanks, Ian
Hi Ian,
I also use Raspberry for Kodi and could not find the way to watch Netflix on my TV. I know all the new TVs have Netflix on it but my TV is good enough for keeping it till 4k make sense. This putting me off subscribing Netflix.
I didn’t try your way of doing it but as my Raspberry is locked for file access it’s bit of pain to copy files to it without using repository. I can see there are many other Raspberry users so maybe it is good idea to create new topic on installing Netflix on Kodi on Raspberry. 🙂
Are you using a Kodi centric distro? Im running Libre Elec on a raspi3 and I assure you Netflix works just fine using these instructions ( and turning off hardware acceleration.)
Hi. This is not working for me. Using OSMC on a raspberry pi 3. I get the following message when starting the addon: “Netflix error: check the log file for more information”.
This is from my kodi.log file:

I’m using raspian and im not sure exactly where I have to save the widevine file. When I open netflix it offers to download it automatically but it needs 2gb of storage and it says I don’t have any free space which is strange because I have an gb sd card with only the basics in it. Thanks for your post!
Hi Yosua, Raspian is based on Linux, so you should be able to save it in /home/[username]/.kodi/cdm
It’s difficult to say what’s causing your storage issue without more information, though. Is your SD card new? What is the capacity and how much space does it say you have left? It’s also worth bearing in mind that Raspian itself takes up nearly 8GB. Hope this helps, Ian
You cant “copy” the .sh while using Openelec…
Hi, the addon should now ask if you’d like to create the Widevine file automatically the first time you open it. If this didn’t happen, I’d recommend reinstalling the Netflix addon. Hope this helps, Ian
This guide works perfectly (almost) on an Android TV. First attempt at installing the Kodi Netflix add-on via zip failed. It worked the second attempt. Logging into Netflix as described above worked perfectly. Videos from the home country played, as they should (but have to manually turn off German language audio and subtitles).
BUT… As soon as the VPN is activated, video will not play. Yes, I can search and find videos from other regions. But that’s it. When attempting to play any video, regardless of the region is from, the problem is exactly as what Are Pee described above “any attempt to play anything results in a moment of buffering, and then back to the menu at which I selected play”. Turn the VPN off and videos play.
Luke’s error above, “Netflix error – check log for further details”, also happens when first trying to start Kodi Netflix. Starting a second time works.
The standard Netflix app on Android TV via a VPN will not work. This is a fact stated by NordVPN. Netflix updated their Android app to stop VPN access. Connecting to a VPN server on a computer and streaming Netflix via web works. Connect to that exact same VPN server through Android TV and Netflix does not work.
I tried these steps on a few of my kodi machines. Happy to see that logging in works and searching and finding results, but any attempt to play anything results in a moment of buffering, and then back to the menu at which I selected play. Rebooted both machines a few times, no go. Not sure what I am missing. No error messages. Could be because I am behind a VPN maybe.
Same issue here.
Two Raspberry PI ‘Liea’ Kodi-18 systems.
Both when thru the installation as discribed , I’m able to browse content on netflix bu any attempt to play a video results in just a few seconds of buffering then returns to the menu.

Hi Are, could you try two things for me: see if it works when running Kodi as an administrator, and try without the VPN. If Netflix works afterwards, I can take a closer look and see what exactly was causing the problem. Thanks, Ian
Hi Ian
It just says Netflix error – check log for further details.
Hi Luke, can you copy and the contents of the log into pastebin.com, then reply with a link? I’d be happy to take a closer look for you. Thanks, Ian
I have installed the netflix addon however when I attempt to configure with my login details by selecting switch accounts it returns me back out to previous screen with a popup error.
Any ideas? Thanks
Hi Luke, do you remember what the error said? Hopefully, it’s something simple so you can start streaming as soon as possible. Thanks, Ian
I just tried to install this on a new install of Kodi (04/11/19). I did all the steps with the create, copy, paste etc. Open up the add on and I can see all of my stuff after I log on but when I try to play anything it tells me that there is no inputstream addon installed and that option is greyed out in the Netflix add on settings. Is this something I need to add in separately?
Hi Tom, the good news is that this is easily fixed. To install this addon, go to Home > Addons > Box Icon in the top left > Install from repository > VideoPlayer InputStream. Once this is installed, you should be able to use Netflix as normal. Thanks, Ian
