I have been using VyprVPN apps to keep my internet activity safe from snoopers like my ISP and potential hackers. I have used the VPN for everyday tasks like browsing, streaming, and downloading and here are my findings.

VyprVPN is a solid all-round VPN, especially since it updated its logging policy. It works with a variety of streaming platforms , making it a good choice for those looking to watch geo-restricted content from abroad. It’s also a good choice for VPN users in China.

Advantages and disadvantages of VyprVPN

Below is a summary of the pros and cons I discovered during my VyprVPN review. I’ll go into more detail later, but here are the pros and cons:

Speed. How fast is VyprVPN?

VyprVPN has recently improved its speed. I mention this because the last time I tested it, its average speed was 44 Mbps, and now it has increased that figure fivefold.

I ran several speed tests at various times of the day on servers in North America, Asia, and Europe. VyprVPN’s average download rate was 258Mbps at all times and locations tested. An excellent result.

These are the average speeds obtained in the tests for each region:

• North America: 395 Mbps
• Europe: 228 Mbps
• Asia: 151 Mbps

VyprVPN’s average speed is fast enough for both standard- and high-definition video streams, and for HD and even 4K UHD live streams. However, if you’re experiencing slowness issues, we recommend switching to the recently added Wireguard protocol. It’s substantially faster than IKEv2 or OpenVPN connections.

If location is not an issue, VyprVPN gives you the option to connect to the fastest server depending on your location. In the server drop-down list, you can see the speed ( ping ) of each server. This shows the latency and how long it takes to send and receive a request from that particular server. You can sort the server list by speed (based on latency time).

Switching between servers rarely took more than a few seconds, and I didn’t experience any dropped connections during testing. I was able to stream content and play online without any issues.

It’s worth noting that these tests should be viewed as a general indicator of the performance you’ll actually see when using these services. These are not definitive results by any means, as the nature of the Internet means there’s always the possibility of random deviations. Depending on the speed of your Internet service, you may see certain discrepancies to a greater or lesser extent.

Apps: What devices work with VyprVPN?

A VyprVPN subscription allows you to connect up to five devices at the same time. This provider creates apps for the following devices:

VyprVPN’s apps have maintained their modern aesthetic since the last update. They are lightweight and easy to use.

Once you sign up for VyprVPN, you’ll have access to a network of over 700 servers in over 70 countries. In the apps, servers are sorted alphabetically by country by default, but you can sort by region or latency time. Below is a list of servers currently available on the VyprVPN network.

Launch options include launching the app every time you start your device or log into your operating system, as well as the ability to connect to the VPN when the app launches.

Streaming, Netflix and Kodi?

Does VyprVPN work with Netflix?

Yeah.

VyprVPN works with US Netflix , as well as other catalogs I’ve tested, including Netflix Germany, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Japan. When I last reviewed VyprVPN, I noticed that it had improved its streaming capabilities , and indeed, streaming still works very well.

VyprVPN also works with many other platforms that impose geo-restriction measures. The streaming section of the VyprVPN website contains instructions for accessing the following sites (among others):

This provider offers minimal support for Kodi, but works with the platform through manual configuration.

Does VyprVPN allow torrenting ?

VyprVPN allows torrenting and offers users unlimited data and bandwidth, and shared IP addresses.

This service does not promote its use for P2P the way some VPNs do, but instead explicitly states this on its FAQ page: “Since our service treats all traffic equally, peer-to-peer and BitTorrent traffic are allowed.”

In the past, VyprVPN has reportedly penalized users for torrenting , but that no longer appears to be the case. However, you should note that VyprVPN’s terms of service prohibit “infringement of copyrights, trademarks, and patents.”

VyprVPN doesn’t store any logs, and except for iOS, all of its apps come with a built-in kill switch. It features DNS leak protection, but WebRTC and IPv6 leak protection isn’t guaranteed.

Does VyprVPN support split tunneling?

Yes. But only on macOS and Android.

Split tunneling lets you choose whether to encrypt your traffic through the VPN or through your ISP, usually on an app-by-app basis. That means you can choose to send your Netflix traffic through your ISP’s connection and send the rest through the VPN. Or, you can choose to send only your P2P traffic through the VPN and send the rest through your ISP. This is a very popular feature among VPN providers these days. While VyprVPN does support split tunneling, it only does so on its macOS and Android apps. Hopefully, this is something that will come to other platforms in the future.

Security, privacy and registration

Many VPNs claim to keep no logs, but the reality doesn’t always match what the marketing promises . If you care about your privacy, you should be aware of your VPN’s logging policy.

We’ve had our doubts about VyprVPN’s logging policy in the past, and I was eager to see if their recent improvements had addressed the issue.

VyprVPN is based in Switzerland, a country with strong privacy laws. As such, there has never been a need for the VPN provider to retain user data logs. However, until late 2018, it was VyprVPN’s company policy to log some identifying metadata, including “ the user’s source IP address, the VyprVPN IP address used by the user, the connection start and end time, and the total number of bytes used .”

Although IP addresses are not typically considered personally identifiable information (PII), they can and have been used to identify individuals through their Internet Service Provider. As such, we avoid recommending providers that keep such logs.

Fortunately, VyprVPN revised its policy in 2018 and now keeps no logs at all . The company even underwent an independent audit to prove that it doesn’t keep logs.

When it comes to security features, VyprVPN offers standard protection plus a couple of extras:

• Strong Encryption: VyprVPN uses 256-bit AES-CBC encryption with 2048-bit RSA keys and SHA256 authentication. Perfect forward secrecy ensures that a compromised encryption key cannot be used to view past sessions.
• Kill Switch (except on iOS) – This switch will cut off your internet connection in case the VPN connection drops for any reason, to prevent data leaks. Please note that it is disabled by default.
• Public Wi-Fi Protection – Enabling this option will ensure that your device connects to the VPN automatically whenever it connects to an untrusted Wi-Fi network.
• Protocol options : You can choose between WireGuard , IKEv2, Chamaleon, and OpenVPN , depending on your needs.

VyprVPN is different from most providers in that it owns all of its servers. Industry standard is for providers to rent their servers out to third-party hosting services. Owning their servers gives the provider greater control over security, as well as ensuring reliable speeds and excellent uptime.

This service recently added support for WireGuard connections, which is great news. The protocol’s simplified (open source) codebase makes it much easier to audit. WireGuard boasts speed and security that are on par with, or even better than, OpenVPN.

VyprVPN uses its own private DNS servers, although the app allows you to switch to a third-party DNS if you wish.

DNS leak protection is built into the apps. The provider doesn’t claim to offer IPv6 or WebRTC leak protection, though I didn’t experience any issues during my most recent test.

IPv6 and WebRTC leaks are not a concern for most people, mainly because not many people have IPv6 and also because not many websites use WebRTC. Additionally, both IPv6 and WebRTC can be disabled if necessary.

This service uses a NAT firewall to prevent unsolicited requests or data packets from entering your system, although these have their limitations.

VyprVPN uses shared IP addresses. This means that every user connected to a given server is assigned the same IP address. This makes it harder for anyone trying to track a person’s activity.

Another feature that comes with a VyprVPN plan is VyprVPN Cloud. This is a solution that offers you additional security when accessing cloud servers. It currently works with Digital Ocean, VirtualBox, and Amazon Web Service (AWS).

Does VyprVPN work in China?

Not many VPNs can escape detection by China’s internet police, so I was interested to see if VyprVPN lived up to its reputation for evading China’s “great firewall.”

In fact, one of the things VyprVPN is known for is its ability to work in China . It has run into some issues recently, but at the time of writing, many users are having success with this VPN in China.

VyprVPN uses proprietary software, giving you the option to use Chameleon™ metadata encoding technology. This helps to mask VPN traffic, making it less likely to be identified as such by the deep packet inspection technology used within China’s “Great Firewall.”

The provider recommends using Chameleon for Windows, MacOS, and Android. IKEv2 is recommended for iOS, and while iOS users have had issues using VyprVPN in China in the past, these issues have been resolved.

Is VyprVPN’s customer service good?

Help documents are available in several languages, including Spanish, French, German, and Chinese. Previously, VyprVPN offered 24-hour chat support via the website. However, it appears to have replaced live chat with a search in its Help section. Unable to reach anyone through what looks like a chat window, I opted to use email instead.

I asked Vypr about IPv6 and WebRTC leaks. I received a very detailed response from VyprVPN the next day, which I thought was correct. And again, the response I got was thoughtful and detailed. Very good help.

After thoroughly testing VyprVPN, would you recommend it to others?

In short, yes.

VyprVPN isn’t the fastest VPN, but speeds are fast enough for streaming and it’s capable of unblocking many restricted sites. The service is safe and reliable, and works well in China, too. VyprVPN has revised its privacy policy and doesn’t keep logs, but there are still some privacy concerns regarding IPv6 and WebRTC leaks and there’s no cryptocurrency payment option.

Alternatives

VyprVPN is definitely one of my top ten providers, especially since it has retracted its old no-logs policy. However, there are great alternatives available.

ExpressVPN is highly secure and works in China. Express has the edge when it comes to streaming , as it has faster speeds and a vast server network in 94 countries.
