Finding the best VPNs for watching MX Player online: Our methodology

There are many factors worth considering before choosing a VPN — some of which are more important than others. Below, we discuss the key areas we focused our testing on:

Network suitability

In 2022, India introduced a law requiring security software firms, such as VPNs, to keep users’ data for up to five years and be ready to hand it over on demand. To their credit, the better VPNs pulled their servers out of India. Instead, they now provide their users with Indian IP addresses using virtual server locations. For this article, we scored providers on the number of virtual server locations they had for India.

We then scored them on the number of servers in their networks overall — as this gives an indication of how likely congestion is. Finally, we scored them on their ability to bypass VPN blocks put in place by popular streaming platforms.

These scores were summed and averaged to generate an overall score out of 10 for each VPN.

The highest scoring VPN was Surfshark. Its score of 9.3 reflects its two virtual server locations for India, its ability to unblock almost anything, and its server count. ExpressVPN is a solid second-best for broadly the same reasons.

Speed

We wanted to ensure that we only recommended VPNs that were fast enough for uninterrupted streaming while using MX Player. To this end, we carried out three speed tests while connected to each VPN’s virtual server locations in India: one in the morning, one at noon, and one in the afternoon.

Measurements were taken using the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app. As we wanted to simulate the average user’s experience, we rate-limited our base connection speed to 250 Mbps (which is near the median broadband speed in the US).

Once the results were in, we summed, averaged, and then converted them to scores out of 10 for each VPN.

NordVPN was the quickest provider overall, with an average download speed that was 18 Mbps faster than the second highest-scoring VPN — Surfshark. IPVanish, with a score of 8.1, is also worth your consideration if a fast connection is important to you.
