Amazon Prime Video Holland offers some exclusive content that isn’t available on other versions. However, Amazon Prime Video restricts content based on your location, so if you try to watch Amazon Prime Holland while on holiday, you won’t have access to all the content you want. Thankfully, a Virtual Private Network (VPN) can help.

A VPN encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through a remote server in a location that you choose. This assigns you an IP address in that location, making you appear to be physically there. As a result, you can trick Dutch websites into granting you access to content that is otherwise blocked.

Unfortunately, Amazon Prime Video has very strict geo-restriction measures. For this reason, only a few VPNs work to stream Prime Video abroad. Those that work tend to grant access to the US version, which means that even fewer VPNs can get you into the Dutch version. How to watch Amazon Prime Holland abroad with a VPN

A VPN sounds a bit complex, but setting one up is straightforward. Just follow the simple steps below.

Here’s how to watch Amazon Prime Video Holland abroad with a VPN:

1. Subscribe to your chosen VPN provider. We recommend NordVPN because it is super fast, reliable, and secure. However, you could try Surfshark if you want a cheaper option, or ExpressVPN if you want a veteran service.
2. Download the appropriate app for your device.
3. Install the app and log in using your new credentials.
4. Connect to a server in Holland.
5. Log in to your Dutch Amazon Prime Video account and you should be able to access it as normal.

If you run into issues, it may be a simple case of clearing your browser’s cache and cookies and trying again.

Amazon Prime Video restrictions

Amazon Prime Video is available in most countries across the globe. However, like streaming giant Netflix, it offers a different library of content depending on where you’re located. This is due to licensing agreements. When it obtains rights to broadcast a show, movie, or event (for example, a football match), the licensing applies only to certain regions. The exception is Amazon’s own original content which it can broadcast wherever it wants.

When you sign up for Amazon Prime Video, you can access a library of content that’s specific to the region in which you signed up. When you travel to another region, the content you have access to may depend on where your account originates from and where you’re traveling.

In some cases, you can unlock Amazon Prime content from abroad using a VPN no matter where your account originates. For example, my account is registered in Canada, but by connecting to a VPN server in the US, I could in theory watch Amazon Prime US.

Amazon Prime Holland works a bit differently. In this case, you need a specific Amazon Prime Holland account to watch content through Amazon.nl That said, it is possible to sign up for a Dutch account from another country by using a VPN. However, when outside of Holland, you will notice that some content is unavailable and will cause the following message:

“This video is currently unavailable to watch in your location.”

Depending on licensing, you may have the option to purchase the content separately or no option to watch at all. This is why you also need a VPN to stream. Thankfully, by connecting to a NordVPN server in Holland, you can log in and regain access to the entire Dutch catalog.

Can I unblock Amazon Prime Video Holland on mobile?

In short, yes, but only if your original account is based in Holland.

Things work a little differently on mobile as you can’t watch through the Amazon Holland website. When using a Dutch NordVPN server, it first appears to unlock restricted content on the mobile site, similar to on desktop.

However, when you try to play the content, you’re directed to the Amazon Prime Video app. The restrictions in the app are different from those on the site and you can only play content that is available in your home country. For example, my account is in Canada, so if I try to watch Dutch content, I get the following error message:

“The video you’re trying to play is available in Holland, but your account is in Canada. To change your account, please contact Amazon Customer Service.”

Note that you may see different error messages depending on your location and device.

If your original account is Dutch and you try watching from abroad, you won’t run into this issue. Instead, when you connect to a Dutch VPN server, you should be able to watch as normal.

Unblocking other Amazon Prime Video libraries

In some countries, including the US, the UK, and Holland, you can watch Amazon Prime Video content directly through the Amazon website (via desktop). Viewing content from these libraries is simple when traveling abroad; just connect to the VPN and stream the content.

In some places, you can no longer watch content directly through the corresponding Amazon site. Instead, when you select Prime Video content, you are redirected to the primevideo.com website. This site only lets you watch content from the country your Amazon account is registered in.

Depending on where your account is registered and where you choose to connect to a VPN, your experience may vary. However, as long as your account is registered in Holland, you will have no problem using your Dutch account abroad with a VPN.

Can I use a free VPN to watch Amazon Prime Video?

Although a casual search for free VPNs will bring back a lot of results, it is important to understand exactly what those services provide.

Free VPNs must still make money because running a global server network incurs substantial ongoing costs. As a result, free VPNs must use your online activities to create a revenue stream. This causes free VPNs to have dodgy privacy policies that allow them to monitor what you do online, harvest your data, and sell it to third parties.

In addition, many free services were found to suffer serious vulnerabilities. Some even contain spyware and lie about the encryption they provide.

Even if privacy isn’t a concern for you (it should be!), free VPNs are too slow to stream on Amazon Prime. Free VPNs have few servers and huge numbers of users, which results in congestion and slow internet speeds. This makes those VPNs unsuitable for data-intensive tasks like streaming.

What’s more, we have yet to find a free VPN with US servers that actually work to access Prime Video outside of the Netherlands. This is because Amazon actively blocks IPs associated with VPNs, and free services don’t have the resources to get around those restrictions.
