When you browse the internet, your online activities can be tracked by ISPs, network administrators at work, and even the government in some areas. However, using a VPN encrypts your internet traffic, making it unreadable. This level of privacy is especially important in regions where online censorship is prevalent or where free online expression poses significant risks.
Another benefit of using a VPN is the ability to geo-spoof your location. Some platforms restrict access based on where you are, but connecting to a VPN server in a supported region can bypass these restrictions and access previously unavailable content. A premium VPN can even allow you to connect to a server in the Philippines, hiding your actual location and improving your online experience.

- Begin by signing up to a suitable VPN service (we recommend ExpressVPN).

Will a free VPN get me an IP address from the Philippines?
Free VPNs can be an appealing prospect, but we advise against using one. For a start, there aren’t many that offer servers in the Philippines so you may not even be able to get a Philippines IP address. Further, these services are almost always painfully slow. This makes day-to-day browsing difficult and streaming (especially of HD content) extremely frustrating, with frequent, lengthy pauses. You may even find yourself disconnected from the VPN, which could leave you unprotected and unaware that anything is wrong.
If users aren’t charged upfront, how can these services afford to operate? Well, it’s because you generate the company money in other ways. You’ll often find that free VPNs insert large ads into the pages you visit, but some even use tracking cookies to harvest data including which sites you visit and how often you do so. Once enough information has been collected, it can be sold to advertisers without your knowledge and or explicit consent.
Finally, there’s the security aspect to consider. While paid services are extensively tested and vetted prior to release, free VPNs usually aren’t. One study found that out of 283 free VPN apps tested, 18% never encrypted user traffic, and 84% were vulnerable to IPv6 leaks. Further, more than 38% of these apps actively tried to infect the user’s system with malware. Even popular free VPNs come with risks, as we found when Hola was caught selling idle user bandwidth to help facilitate a botnet.
The best way to protect yourself online is by using a reputable VPN provider with a customer-first privacy policy.
Methodology: Finding the best VPNs for watching Filipino TV
There are surprisingly few major VPN providers with servers in the Philippines. This limits our choices right off the bat, but that doesn’t mean that all of the services that remain are up to the task. We filtered out all but the best VPNs using the strict set of requirements below:
- Filipino servers: Most streaming services from the Philippines are geo-blocked, so you’ll need access to Filipino servers to spoof your location and access them abroad. We’d like to see lots of servers, since this usually means more consistent speeds.
- Solid performance: Live streaming requires a fast connection, so we looked for the fastest VPNs on the market at the moment. However, it’s important to remember that the farther away you are, the slower your speeds are likely to be.
- Versatility: We found VPNs that work with a wide range of streaming services to give you as many options as possible. Some of the services we tested include HOOQ, Netflix, Disney Plus, and ESPN.
- Strong security: We required our top VPNs to follow no-logging policies. They also had to include powerful security tools such as 256-bit encryption, a kill switch, and protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks.
- Easy to use apps: The easier a service is to use, the better it is for everyone. We strongly prefer VPNs with 24/7 live chat, multi-platform support, and well-organized menus. Some of the providers above even let you protect all your devices simultaneously.

Streaming Filipino TV abroad: FAQs answered
Can I watch Philippine TV abroad with a VPN?
Once you’ve connected to one of your VPN’s servers in the Philippines, you should be able to securely access most geo-restricted Philippine sites from anywhere in the world. For instance, you’ll be able to stream content from platforms such as Netflix, Iflix, iWant TV, HOOQ, and Viu.
Note that subscription services can be slightly more difficult, however, as you’ll still need to sign up. Netflix is simple, since it’s available in almost any country in the world, but some services require a payment method linked to a local address. If you usually live in the Philippines, you can register using your regular credit card, but if you don’t, and the service requires you to provide identification, you might be out of luck.
Why else might I need a Philippine IP address?
Many online services (including banks) automatically send out alerts when your account is accessed from a different country. However, even if you’re abroad, if you have a Philippine IP address, these platforms likely won’t notice that you’re actually elsewhere. As such, a VPN enables you to safely log in to your BPI, BDO Unibank, or Citibank account while on vacation, without worrying about having your access restricted.
While traveling, you’re far more likely to use public wifi networks. The problem is that these networks are often poorly secured, and equally troubling, there’s no way of knowing who’s monitoring user activity. Thanks to your VPN’s encryption, though, you’ll be able to browse safely, free from prying eyes, wherever you go.
What internet restrictions are in place in the Philippines?
The Philippines actually has a mixed record when it comes to online censorship. Unlike China, its government doesn’t impose blanket restrictions on particular kinds of content, but it does have a history of concerted online disinformation and social manipulation campaigns.
President Duterte infamously said: “Just because you’re a journalist you are not exempted from assassination.” The Philippines remains one of the most dangerous countries in the world to be a journalist, and as a result, citizens are far more likely to censor their own content than the government is. For this reason alone, we highly recommend using a VPN when in the Philippines.
Can I get an IP address from a specific part of the Philippines?
If you’re looking for an IP address from Manila then yes, you can get an IP address from a specific part of the Philippines. However, most VPNs only offer servers in Manila while many don’t even specify the specific location.
It’s more common to be able to get an IP address from a specific part of the US or UK, for example, where there are more servers available across more locations (most VPNs only have a few servers in the Philippines although CyberGhost has 70 in Manila at the time of writing).
Is it legal to use a VPN in the Philippines?
Yes, it is legal to use a VPN in the Philippines. There are no laws or regulations that specifically prohibit the use of VPNs in the Philippines and VPN websites and servers are currently available there without issues.
In the Philippines, many people use a VPN to access geo-restricted content, enhance their online privacy and security, and to bypass internet censorship.
Remember that while using and having a VPN is legal, it is still illegal to use a VPN to conceal online harm or to engage in cybercrime. This may include the act of accessing content or services purposely blocked by the Philippines government.
Nothing in this article should be taken as legal advice and we recommend that you understand local laws before deciding to use a VPN to bypass online restrictions. Use of a VPN is always at your own risk.
How can I test if my IP address has changed to the Philippines?
To confirm that your IP address has changed after connecting to a VPN server in the Philippines, visit an IP checking website like ‘WhatIsMyIPAddress.com.’ The website will show your current IP address and location, indicating the Philippines if the VPN connection was successful.
What other ways are there to get a Philippines IP address?
In addition to VPNs, there are other ways to obtain a Philippines IP address. These methods include proxy servers and smart DNS services. However, it’s important to note that these options are less secure and reliable than a premium VPN. Proxy servers operate in a similar manner to VPNs but without encryption, which leaves your data vulnerable. Smart DNS services alter your DNS to make it seem like you’re in a different location, but they do not hide your IP address or provide encryption.
What Are the Dangers of Using VPNs for a Philippines IP Address?
Although VPNs are usually safe and legal, they still have some risks that must be considered. These risks can include:
- Choosing a low-quality or free VPN: These types of VPNs may log your data and sell it to third parties, which can compromise the privacy advantages of using a VPN.
- Legal consequences: If you use a VPN for illegal activities, you are still responsible for your actions according to local laws.
- Connection issues: If your VPN connection fails while carrying out sensitive online activities, your IP address may be revealed.
Why do so few VPNs have a Philippines server?
There are several possible reasons why VPNs have limited servers in the Philippines, but the specific cause is unclear. These are the most likely:
- Cost: High infrastructure costs can deter VPN providers.
- Legal Concerns: Regulatory issues in the Philippines may pose challenges.
- Demand: Lower user demand for Philippines IPs makes it less lucrative.
- Data Centers: Limited availability of quality data centers.
- Security: Potential high-risk for cyber-attacks.
