A Romanian IP address is a useful tool if you want to browse the internet safely from within the country or access Romanian content from abroad. Whichever reason for wanting one, the easiest way to gain an IP address from Romania is by using a VPN with Romanian servers.
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) run your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel, which not only protects your data and privacy but also allows you to spoof your location. By connecting to a server in another country, you can change your IP address and use services that are only normally available in specific parts of the world. This means that you can use a VPN to get a Romanian IP address and browse the internet as though you were actually in Romania, regardless of your real location.
In this article we list the best VPNs with servers in Romania and explain how to use them to gain a Romanian IP address. We provide detailed reviews of each of the VPNs we recommend later on but in case you’re short on time, we’ll start with a brief summary.

Using a free VPN to get a Romania IP address
Free VPNs can be an attractive prospect, but they actually come with several major disadvantages that prevent us from recommending them. First of all, you’re unlikely to find a free VPN with servers in Romania, which means you won’t be able to use one to gain a Romanian IP address. In the event that you do find one, it’s likely to offer a disappointing service. Free services usually have limited networks yet more users than the majority of paid VPNs. This causes major network slowdown, which manifests as slow browsing speeds and videos that pause frequently to buffer if they load at all. Free VPNs are also usually the first to be blacklisted by copyright holders, so you probably won’t be able to use them to access your chosen site.
There are more concerning risks, too. Since these VPNs are ‘free’, the services find other ways to create profit. Often, they’ll sell ad space or offer increased speeds for a monthly fee, but the problem is that some go even further. By storing tracking cookies on your device, these companies can gather data about how you use the internet. This can then be sold to advertisers later, most commonly without your knowledge.
It can be difficult to even find a safe, free VPN. In the past, we’ve seen a major provider sell idle user bandwidth to help run a botnet. Unfortunately, when well-known VPNs resort to shady business tactics, it seems smaller services are more inclined to act the same way; a recent analysis of over 280 free VPN apps showed that almost 40% contained malware, while 18% used no encryption, and over 80% were vulnerable to IPv6 leaks.
To keep yourself and your personal information safe, we recommend using a reputable VPN with a history of standing up for its users’ privacy instead of a free service.
How to check if your IP address has changed to Romania
There are a few different ways to tell if your VPN has successfully changed your IP address or not. The easiest method is to use one of the many tools specifically created for this purpose.
Just follow the steps below to make sure you’re actually browsing with a Romanian IP address:
- Open up our IP address checker
- You’ll see your real IP address. Make a note of this so we can compare it later
- Next, log into your VPN app and choose a server in Romania
- Wait a moment for the VPN to connect
- Go back to the IP address-checking tool and refresh the page
- It should now display a completely different IP address and say that you’re in Romania.
- If not, try clearing your cookies, switching to a different Romanian server, or changing your connection protocol.
- If none of these solutions help, get in touch with your VPN’s support team for more assistance
Getting a Romanian IP address: FAQs
Are VPNs legal in Romania?
VPNs are legal in Romania and most of the world. There are a handful of countries that place restrictions on which providers you can use, but the vast majority of locations have no issue with you keeping your online activities private. After all, millions of people rely on VPNs to work remotely, bank safely, and keep their identities hidden.
Disclaimer: Although we’ve spent hours researching this topic, we are not legal experts. As such, nothing we’ve said above should be taken as legal advice. We encourage you to consult local laws or perhaps even seek a professional’s opinion before attempting to use a VPN while traveling abroad.
Can I watch Romanian TV abroad with a VPN?
Most geo-blocked services examine the user’s IP address to see if they’re in a specific country or not. Connecting to a VPN server automatically gives you a new, country-specific IP address, meaning that a Romanian server allows you to browse the internet and stream content from platforms like ProTV, TVR, and Digi24 as though you were actually there.
You’ll find that some platforms have more advanced geo-blocking measures than others. They might use your phone’s GPS or browser’s location data to double-check. You might also be required to provide a local address, phone number, or payment method when you sign up. If you normally live in Romania, you may still be able to sign up from abroad, but otherwise, these services will be very difficult if not impossible to register for.
Can I get in trouble for streaming Romanian TV from abroad?
It might surprise you to learn that most countries don’t actually have laws that are explicitly against accessing region-locked content with a VPN. In fact, in all of our years of research, we’ve never heard of a single person being prosecuted for this anywhere in the world.
Now, using a VPN to watch content that’s normally inaccessible where you are is almost always against a streaming platform’s terms of service. All the same, even if it detects you’re connected to a VPN (which is far from guaranteed), you’ll usually just be made to turn it off before you can stream anything.
What else can I use a Romanian IP address for?
One common use is for accessing online banking services abroad. Automated anti-fraud alerts are becoming more common. Usually, these are triggered when a system detects that you’ve logged in (or attempted to) from a different country. While designed with good intentions, these measures also mean that when traveling, you could find yourself unable to access your account until you verify your identity. You can greatly reduce the likelihood of this happening by connecting to a VPN server in your home country first.
Public wifi networks are convenient but rarely as secure as they should be. There’s no way of knowing who’s monitoring your activities, and public networks are prime spots for hackers to lie in wait. Further, certain websites might be inaccessible via certain networks. VPNs not only allow you to prevent monitoring, but they also let you browse the internet freely, even in countries with strict online censorship.
