IP address Malaysia

With a Malaysian IP address, you can unblock geo-restricted Malaysian websites and services from anywhere — whether that’s your online bank or your favorite news site. You’ll also be able to stream TV channels from Malaysia and unblock Malaysian streaming services such as Iflix and Tonton. This article will explain how to get a Malaysian IP address with a VPN.

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) encrypts your internet traffic, redirecting it through a VPN server in the location of your choice — in this case, Malaysia. In doing so, the VPN hides your true IP address and location, protecting your privacy from your internet service provider (ISP), the Malaysian government, and snoopers.

We’ll explain how to use a VPN to gain a Malaysian IP address and explore the various options in depth. If you’re short on time, here’s a quick summary.

Malaysia VPN testing criteria

VPN services are present in large numbers across the internet. But that doesn’t mean they’re all good options for a Malaysian IP address. We found the best by testing providers in the following areas:

  • Network suitability: The first thing we checked for was whether the VPN had severs in Malaysia that could provide users with a Malaysian IP address. Next, we looked at the size of their server networks overall: how many and in which countries. Finally, we looked at whether VPNs had obfuscation that could help users evade blocks.
  • Speed: There’s little point getting an IP address in Malaysia if the resulting connection is too slow to use. To find which providers were fastest, we carried out multiple speed tests while connected to each VPN’s Malaysian servers.
  • Security and privacy: To ensure that your online activities are not revealed to potentially hostile third parties, we only recommended VPNs that scored highly when tested against 16 security and privacy criteria.
  • Ease of use: To help you access a Malaysian IP address with the minimum of fuss, we looked for VPNs that had user-friendly services. This involved testing them against 10 different ease-of-use criteria.
  • Value for money: As well as looking at the base price of VPN subscriptions, it’s wise to take into consideration any deals that might exist. In all, we looked at eight different metrics relating to each provider’s overall value for money.

You can read an in-depth explanation of how we test and rank the VPNs we recommend in our methodology section below.

While connected to its servers in KL, we recorded speeds of between 115.26 Mbps and 120.37 Mbps. Overall, the provider averaged 118.97 Mbps, which is easily fast enough for streaming in UHD on four devices at the same time.

Not many providers offer as expansive a set of security tools as ProtonVPN. For starters, it prevents DNS and IPv6 leaks, and its unbeatable encryption ensures your activities can’t be monitored. There’s also a kill switch, automatic ad and tracker-blocking, a split tunneling feature, and the option to configure port forwarding.

Crucially, ProtonVPN follows a proven zero-logs policy and allows you to pay anonymously using cash or Bitcoin. Its Secure Core servers are great for tasks where privacy is paramount, though you should note that they’re quite slow.

ProtonVPN apps are available for Windows, Linux, MacOS, iOS, and Android. If you’d prefer, you can follow manual setup instructions to get this service running directly from your router. Methodology: How we found the best VPNs for getting an IP address for Malaysia

Every VPN is different, and while this means that there’s a service for every situation, it also makes it tricky for people to decide which one to use. That’s where we come in: we carefully considered the most important things a VPN should offer for gaining a Malaysian IP address and tested our VPNs accordingly.

Network suitability

We started by scoring providers on the number of server locations they had in Malaysia. We then scored them on the overall number of countries they supported and the overall number of servers in their networks (when you want to access online content while traveling abroad, the more available IP addresses, the better). Finally, we scored providers on whether they had obfuscation that could disguise VPN traffic — this is essential if you’re trying to get a Malaysian IP address while in a country that blocks VPNs.

These scores were summed, averaged and converted to an overall score out of 10 for each provider. This makes direct comparison easier, as the chart below demonstrates.

With a score of 9.8, ProtonVPN was the clear winner. It is the only provider with two server locations in Malaysia and it has the most servers of any provider overall. NordVPN is the next best option, with a score of 8.4.

Speed

If you want to watch Malaysian TV lag and buffer-free, you’ll need a VPN that’s suitably quick. We found the best options by speed-testing each provider’s Malaysian servers: once in the morning, once at noon, and once in the afternoon.

We rate-limited our base connection speed to 250 Mbps, which is more representative of the average user’s experience in the US (where the median broadband speed is 279.93 Mbps). Once connected, we took measurements using the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app.

The results for each provider were summed, averaged, and converted to a score out of 10 relative to the other providers.

With a score of 10, NordVPN was the fastest provider overall. Surfshark was the next-fastest, with a score of 9.3. Both providers are particularly well-suited to demanding online activities, whether that’s live multi-player gaming or streaming on multiple devices in high resolution.

Security and privacy

At a minimum, we look for VPNs that secure your data with 256-bit AES encryption (effectively impossible for hackers to crack), and that provide protection from DNS leaks as well as a kill switch. The best offer additional security and privacy features — which you can see in the table below.

Each of the metrics used above was assigned a score based on its relative importance. These scores were summed to generate an overall score out of 10 for comparison.

NordVPN and Surfshark each scored 9.5, and offered the best protection while using a Malaysian IP address. Both providers use strong encryption and have no-logs policies that have been independently audited several times. ProtonVPN and PIA also scored highly, and are good alternatives.

Ease of use

You may find a VPN that offers much of the above yet has apps that aren’t exactly beginner-friendly. Having tested many different VPN apps — and the services behind them — we’ve identified those that offer a hassle-free experience. You can see how the providers performed against our individual ease-of-use metrics in the table below.

Again, each metric was given a score, which was used to generate an overall score out of 10 for each provider.

NordVPN and PIA each scored an impressive 9.6, putting them at the top of the list for easy-to-use providers. Their task-specific servers are handy, and their apps user-friendly. If you want to try them out, both providers will make good on their money-back guarantees.

Value for money

Speaking of money, we fully investigate whether provider’s are worth what they charge. Seemingly steep prices can be tempered by discounts or by making account-sharing a possibility through a generous connection allowance. You can see which providers are particularly flexible with their pricing in the table below.

As before, each of the above metrics was assigned a score. These scores were combined to generate an overall score out of 10 for each provider.

Surfshark, with a score of 9.7, was the best-value provider overall. It allows unlimited device connections and wallet-friendly long-term subscriptions. IPVanish is fractionally more expensive, but does also allow users to connect all of their devices at once.

Using a free VPN to get an IP address for Malaysia

While it’s tempting to look for a VPN that can get you a Malaysian IP for free, it’s not the best idea. Unfortunately, not many free VPNs have servers in Malaysia, and without that, you won’t be able to gain a Malaysian IP address. What’s more, even if you do find one, they tend to be of pretty poor quality. The reason for this is that free VPNs have many users but not many servers. This leads to high levels of traffic, which can make streaming a frustrating experience with a lot of buffering and lag. What’s more, our experience with free VPNs has taught us that they often can’t securely access popular geo-restricted content, such as Netflix and Iflix.

In addition, VPNs are supposed to help you stay safer online, but free VPNs are rarely safe to use as they often lack secure encryption and basic security features such as a kill switch. These features are particularly important for those who want to use a VPN for torrenting. Worse still, some free VPNs knowingly breach your privacy by selling your data and online activity to the highest bidder.

Quite simply, few free VPNs can come close to the quality of the best-paid VPNs. But, if you’re determined to try and get a Malaysian IP address for free, here are some tips on how to do it safely.

How to get a Malaysian IP address for free with a VPN (safely):

  • Many quality VPNs offer free trials. These can last from 1 day to a week, which is enough for a one-off use or if you are going on a very short trip. Then, if you like what you see, you can always sign up after the trial.
  • All the VPNs we’ve listed here offer money-back guarantees that last up to 45 days, so why not take advantage of one of them? Unlike a free trial, you will have to make a payment upfront, but you have the reassurance that if you don’t like the service or it can’t do what you need it to, you can claim a full refund.

Why you might need an IP address for Malaysia

The most popular reason for using an IP address for Malaysia is that it lets you unblock geo-restricted websites and services from Malaysia, whatever your location. So you can access your home TV and streaming channels, access your online banking without issue, and keep up with local news. In addition to this, a VPN with a large network of servers allows you to access blocked content from countries all over the world. For example, a VPN with servers in the USA may allow you to access streaming services such as Netflix US and Amazon Prime Video.

If you live in Malaysia or you’re there on holiday or for work, an IP address for Malaysia via a VPN can protect your privacy. According to Freedom House, Malaysia’s internet freedom is only “Partly Free”, though there has been a slight improvement in civil liberties since the Barisan Nasional (BN) political coalition lost to an opposition alliance in 2018.

Nevertheless, there are still many laws that restrict the media and encourage self-censorship. Since 2023, various news sites and websites hosting LGBTQIA content have been blocked. A new Online Safety Bill was passed in 2024, which gives authorities more powers to remove content deemed “harmful”. A VPN ensures you can access blocked sites at any time.

Using a VPN in Malaysia: FAQs

Should I use a VPN if I live in Malaysia?

You should use a VPN regardless of your location due to the fact that it secures your data and allows you to bypass geo-blocking. However, it’s particularly important you use a VPN if you live in Malaysia because not only is there some internet censorship, internet users can even be arrested and prosecuted for what they post online. Using a VPN allows you to browse anonymously without having to worry about online surveillance.

How will I know when my IP address has been changed to Malaysia?

Many VPN apps display your current IP address, so you should see it change as you connect to a server. However, there are other ways to know when your IP address has been changed to Malaysia. In particular, you can try accessing a geo-restricted website or service and seeing if it’s now available in your location. Otherwise, use an online service such as whatismyip.com, which tells you both the IP address and country attached to it.

Are VPNs legal in Malaysia?

Yes, VPNs are legal in Malaysia. We particularly encourage the use of a VPN in Malaysia due to the country’s online censorship. By using a VPN, you can unblock geo-restricted content and protect your privacy from your ISP and the government.

Do VPNs give static or dynamic IP addresses from Malaysia?

VPNs provide shared IP addresses, which means that when you connect to a server, you share the same IP address as other users. These IP addresses can sometimes change, which makes them somewhat dynamic — however, they won’t change every time you reboot your device, for example. While some VPNs offer static IP addresses (those that never change), we have yet to find a VPN that offers static IP addresses for Malaysia.
