Much of today’s online content is geographically restricted. But by gaining a Malaysian IP address, you can unblock geo-restricted Malaysian websites and services, be it your online bank or your favorite news site, from anywhere. You’ll also be able to stream TV channels from Malaysia and unblock streaming services such as Iflix and Tonton to watch Malaysian TV shows and movies. This article will explain how to get a Malaysian IP address with a VPN.
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) encrypts your internet traffic, redirecting it through a VPN server in the location of your choice – in this case, Malaysia. In doing so, the VPN hides your true IP address and location, protecting your privacy from your internet service provider (ISP), the Malaysian government, and snoopers. This also means you can connect to a Malaysian server and access your home content while traveling abroad.
We’ll talk you through how to use a VPN to gain a Malaysian IP address, and we’ll list the best VPNs for the job. We’ll explore the various options in depth in this article, but in case you’re short on time, here’s a short summary.

Methodology: How we found the best VPNs for getting an IP address for Malaysia
Every VPN is different, and while this means that there’s a service for every situation, it also makes it tricky for people to decide which one to use. That’s where we come in: we carefully considered the most important things a VPN should offer for gaining a Malaysian IP address and tested our VPNs accordingly. Below are the criteria we looked for:
- Servers in Malaysia: All of the VPNs listed in this post have servers in Malaysia. This is essential for gaining a Malaysian IP address. However, we also look for these VPN services to have servers in dozens of countries, such as the US, UK, and Australia. This allows you to access even more online content while traveling abroad.
- Speed: Unfortunately, some VPNs are far too slow for streaming and torrenting. Our speed tests helped us identify the fastest VPNs, all of which include unlimited bandwidth. This means that you can travel outside Malaysia, connect to a server back home, and still be able to watch Malaysian TV lag and buffer-free.
- Unblocking: There is some censorship of online content in Malaysia, and you’ll also face the usual geographic restrictions if you travel overseas. However, we’ve found VPNs with strong unblocking abilities. In fact, we’ve even tested them with popular streaming services such as Netflix and TV channels, including TV1.
- Security: At a minimum, we look for a VPN to secure your data with 256-bit AES encryption (effectively impossible for hackers to crack). There should also be protection from DNS leaks as well as a kill switch. In some cases, you’ll have the option to connect to a Double VPN server for an extra layer of encryption.
- Privacy: If you’re concerned about online surveillance, it’s important not only that your internet traffic is encrypted but that you use a no-logs VPN. To find the best for your online anonymity, we’ve looked at more than 140 VPN logging policies.
- Devices: For total flexibility, you need to be able to use your VPN on any and all of your devices. So we look for providers that support major operating systems like Windows, MacOS, Android, and iOS at a minimum. But we also like them to work with other platforms like Amazon Fire TV, Linux, and Wi-Fi routers. We also like providers that offer browser extensions.
- Ease of use: You may find a VPN that offers much of the above yet has apps that aren’t exactly beginner-friendly. Having tested many different VPN apps, we’ve identified those that offer a quick and easy experience. Better still, all of the best VPNs for getting a Malaysian IP address include 24/7 live chat and email support.
- Value for money: There are so many VPN services competing for your attention, and as such, it’s not hard to find some great deals. The best are those listed in this post because we offer VPN discount coupons for each. Better still, all of the VPNs chosen include a risk-free money-back guarantee of at least 30 days.
We test each and every VPN as part of our VPN testing methodology. This allows us to get a better understanding of what each service does and doesn’t offer so we can make the most accurate recommendations possible.
Using a free VPN to get an IP address for Malaysia
While it’s tempting to look for a VPN that can get you a Malaysian IP for free, it’s not the best idea. Unfortunately, not many free VPNs have servers in Malaysia, and without that, you won’t be able to gain a Malaysian IP address. What’s more, even if you do find one, they tend to be of pretty poor quality. The reason for this is that free VPNs have many users but not many servers. This leads to high levels of traffic, which can make streaming a frustrating experience with a lot of buffering and lag. What’s more, our experience with free VPNs has taught us that they often can’t securely access popular geo-restricted content, such as Netflix and Iflix.
In addition, VPNs are supposed to help you stay safer online, but free VPNs are rarely safe to use as they often lack secure encryption and basic security features such as a kill switch. These features are particularly important for those who want to use a VPN for torrenting. Worse still, some free VPNs knowingly breach your privacy by selling your data and online activity to the highest bidder.
Quite simply, few free VPNs can come close to the quality of the best-paid VPNs. But, if you’re determined to try and get a Malaysian IP address for free, here are some tips on how to do it safely.
How to get a Malaysian IP address for free with a VPN (safely):
- Many quality VPNs offer free trials. These can last from 1 day to a week, which is enough for a one-off use or if you are going on a very short trip. Then, if you like what you see, you can always sign up after the trial.
- All the VPNs we’ve listed here offer money-back guarantees that last up to 45 days, so why not take advantage of one of them? Unlike a free trial, you will have to make a payment upfront, but you have the reassurance that if you don’t like the service or it can’t do what you need it to, you can claim a full refund.
Why you might need an IP address for Malaysia
The most popular reason for using an IP address for Malaysia is that it lets you unblock geo-restricted websites and services from Malaysia, whatever your location. So you can access your home TV and streaming channels, access your online banking without issue, and keep up with local news. In addition to this, a VPN with a large network of servers allows you to access blocked content from countries all over the world. For example, a VPN with servers in the USA may allow you to access streaming services such as Netflix US and Amazon Prime Video.
If you live in Malaysia or you’re there on holiday or for work, an IP address for Malaysia via a VPN can protect your privacy. According to Freedom House, Malaysia’s internet freedom is only “Partly Free” and suffered a slight decline in 2018. In particular, the introduction of the Fake News Act of 2018 saw internet users arrested and prosecuted for online speech. Covering anything from news to images and recordings, The Fake News Act makes it an offense to even possess news that is entirely or partly false. Using a VPN keeps your online activities private.
In 2017, it was reported that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had blocked over 5,000 websites. While the majority of these were related to porn, gambling, and piracy, others were news websites, including Malaysia Chronicle and The Malaysian Insider. Such censorship has even extended to international websites, including the online publishing platform Medium and the publication Asia Sentinel in January 2016. While some of these restrictions have since been lifted, a VPN ensures you can access such sites at any time.
Using a VPN in Malaysia: FAQs
Should I use a VPN if I live in Malaysia?
You should use a VPN regardless of your location due to the fact that it secures your data and allows you to bypass geo-blocking. However, it’s particularly important you use a VPN if you live in Malaysia because not only is there some internet censorship, internet users can even be arrested and prosecuted for what they post online. Using a VPN allows you to browse anonymously without having to worry about online surveillance.
Can I get a Malaysian IP address without a VPN?
The easiest ways to get a Malaysian IP address are to be in Malaysia or use a VPN. While it is technically possible to get one using a proxy server, we’d advise against this method for a couple of reasons. Proxies aren’t particularly adept at beating geographic restrictions, and it can be difficult to find a reliable, reputable provider that works with all of the services you want to access.
VPNs are the best alternative for international travelers since they provide security and privacy benefits in addition to spoofing your location. VPNs are extremely popular, and there are many well-respected providers to choose from, some of which have been around for decades. Most major VPNs include a free trial or a money-back guarantee, too, so there’s no risk.
How will I know when my IP address has been changed to Malaysia?
Many VPN apps display your current IP address, so you should see it change as you connect to a server. However, there are other ways to know when your IP address has been changed to Malaysia. In particular, you can try accessing a geo-restricted website or service and seeing if it’s now available in your location. Otherwise, use an online service such as whatismyip.com, which tells you both the IP address and country attached to it.
Are VPNs legal in Malaysia?
Yes, VPNs are legal in Malaysia. We particularly encourage the use of a VPN in Malaysia due to the presence of online censorship in the country. By using a VPN, you can unblock geo-restricted content and protect your privacy from your ISP and the government.
How can I watch Malaysian TV abroad with a VPN?
If you’re missing your favorite TV shows from Malaysia, a VPN can certainly help. By connecting to a server in Malaysia, you’ll be able to watch Malaysian TV channels anywhere in the world. This includes content from terrestrial channels such as TV3, TV9, and NTV7. What’s more, you’ll also be able to stream popular Malaysian streaming services, including Iflix and Tonton.
In order to do this, you simply need to connect to a VPN server in Malaysia. By switching to servers in other countries, such as the US or UK, you’ll also be able to watch streaming services from back home, including Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, and ESPN.
Do VPNs give static or dynamic IP addresses from Malaysia?
VPNs provide shared IP addresses, which means that when you connect to a server, you share the same IP address as other users. These IP addresses can sometimes change, which makes them somewhat dynamic — however, they won’t change every time you reboot your device, for example. While some VPNs offer static IP addresses (those that never change), we have yet to find a VPN that offers static IP addresses for Malaysia.
What else can I do with a VPN?
VPNs are useful tools for a lot of reasons besides keeping your online activities safe and helping you access geographically blocked content. One common reason for using a VPN is to stay safe on public wifi, which is notoriously insecure and can be hunting grounds for hackers. Another reason is to access your online banking securely from abroad without raising any flags with your bank, which may not let you access your accounts from outside the country.
