Methodology: How we found the best VPNs for getting an IP address for Malaysia

Every VPN is different, and while this means that there’s a service for every situation, it also makes it tricky for people to decide which one to use. That’s where we come in: we carefully considered the most important things a VPN should offer for gaining a Malaysian IP address and tested our VPNs accordingly. 

Network suitability

We started by scoring providers on the number of server locations they had in Malaysia. We then scored them on the overall number of countries they supported and the overall number of servers in their networks (when you want to access online content while traveling abroad, the more available IP addresses, the better). Finally, we scored providers on whether they had obfuscation that could disguise VPN traffic — this is essential if you’re trying to get a Malaysian IP address while in a country that blocks VPNs.

These scores were summed, averaged and converted to an overall score out of 10 for each provider. This makes direct comparison easier, as the chart below demonstrates.

Speed

We rate-limited our base connection speed to 250 Mbps, which is more representative of the average user’s experience in the US (where the median broadband speed is 279.93 Mbps). Once connected, we took measurements using the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app.

The results for each provider were summed, averaged, and converted to a score out of 10 relative to the other providers.
