Methodology: Finding the best VPNs for an Indonesian IP address
The good news is that it’s a buyer’s market right now; consumers have never had more options when it comes to digital security. Unfortunately, there are a ton of providers that don’t have servers in Indonesia and plenty more that are too slow for regular use, regardless. Our experts have done the hard part for you, hunting high and low for the best, most secure, most reliable VPNs for the job. Our testing is split into five areas, and we’ll cover all of these below:
Indonesian speeds
It’s surprisingly tricky to get test results that accurately reflect the speeds you can expect. This is because two tests run back to back can have completely different results. Not only that, but a VPN’s speeds can fluctuate based on how many people are using that server, what time of day it is, what connection protocol you’re using, and how far away you are. Someone in Thailand will likely have better performance on an Indonesian server than someone in the US, for instance.
We created a testing process with the express intention of minimizing these variables. We began by limiting our connection to 246 Mbps (roughly the US home broadband average). The next step was testing each VPN’s Indonesian servers in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon before averaging the results. You’ll find a side-by-side comparison below:
Finally, we normalized and charted these results. This allowed us to rank VPNs relative to the top performer, making any minor differences in speed highly-visible.
As you can see, NordVPN was the fastest service we tested. That said, Surfshark and ProtonVPN weren’t too far behind. On the other hand, PrivateVPN had the lowest average speed. We’ve seen this provider struggle to avoid speed loss with long-distance connections before, so this wasn’t unexpected but it does highlight that there’s still room for improvement.
Server availability
It goes without saying that providers must offer at least one server location in Indonesia. However, that’s not the only thing our team pays attention to. We also examine how many locations each VPN has around the world since it’s unlikely you’ll want an Indonesian IP address all of the time. When available, we also considered the number of servers each VPN had; this isn’t a huge factor, but the fewer servers there are in a location, the more likely they are to be overloaded by other users.
We assigned points based on our top VPNs’ performance in the above areas, then weighted and normalized them. This allowed us to give each a single, representative score out of 10, and made it easier to see small differences when charted side by side:
ProtonVPN took the top spot here with an astounding 9.8 points out of 10. This is largely thanks to its expansive network and high server count. CyberGhost and NordVPN, meanwhile, came in second and third with 9.7 and 9.5, respectively. PrivateVPN, with just a single Indonesian server and roughly 200 servers total, came in last.
Security and privacy
One of the main reasons people use VPNs is to keep their browsing habits private. After all, even people who have nothing to hide would probably prefer that their local hotspot owner didn’t see what they were looking at online. To ensure we only recommend VPNs with exceptional security, we checked their audit histories, encryption levels, and base of operations, as well as much, much more. Take a look at the table below for a full list of our findings:
VPN Provider | Activity logs | IP logs | Encryption | Authentication | Keys | Perfect Forward Secrecy | DNS leak protection | IPv6 leak protection | Private DNS | Torrenting allowed | Kill switch | HQ outside 9 eyes | Obfuscation | Supported protocols | Anonymous payment options | Additional security features |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Now, we know that not everyone is a digital privacy expert. If you’re not sure what the technical terms above mean, don’t worry! We assigned scores based on each VPN’s performance, then normalized them to give each an overall rating out of 10. Let’s see how they stacked up:
We actually have a tie for first place between NordVPN and Surfshark. NordVPN could do with enhancing its authentication ever so slightly, while Surfshark lost out for being based in a Nine Eyes country (though its no logs policy helps offset this somewhat). Conversely, PrivateVPN scored just 8.6 points – it’s still highly secure, it’s just that it lacks some of the more advanced tools that its rivals have.
Ease of use
Every VPN is different. Some are tailored more towards experts, while others are designed for beginners. However, what matters most to us is ensuring that the services we recommend are simple and straightforward to use, no matter how advanced their settings are. For instance, we strongly prefer VPNs with searchable server lists, well-described options, and 24/7 support. We also account for how easy it is to sign up and cancel your subscription. Here’s what we found:
VPN Provider | Apps for all major platforms | Novice-friendly design | Ease of signup (reviewer to score) | Router support | Unblocking consistency | Task specific servers | Network | Ease of cancellation | Interface | Feature parity |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Category | Ease of Use | Ease of Use | Ease of Use | Ease of Use | Ease of Use | Ease of Use | Ease of Use | Ease of Use | Ease of Use | Ease of Use |

PrivateVPN | Yes | Yes | 4 | Standard | Generally works | No | 60+ countries | Very easy | Well-organised | Most features available on all versions |
Seems like quite a balanced category, doesn’t it? Still, if we normalize the results and put them side by side, we can see some providers come out better than others:
Private Internet Access and NordVPN each scored 9.6 points out of 10, making them tied for first place. IPVanish and ExpressVPN were hot on their heels though, with 9.4 and 9.3 points, respectively. Even our lowest scorer, PrivateVPN, earned an impressive 8.6 points – we’d have liked to have seen some task-specific servers and 24/7 live chat, since most of its rivals offer at least one of these.
Streaming ability
Normally, when a user requests an IP address from a specific country, it’s because they’re trying to access services that aren’t available elsewhere. For instance, you may not be able to stream TVRI or Vidio if you’re traveling outside of Indonesia, which is when a VPN would come in handy. Our team put our top VPNs to the test, checking to see if they worked with popular platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video, and if so, how reliable they were.
That’s not all! We also looked into whether each service included anything that might make your streaming experience a little smoother. This may be automatic ad-blocking tools, streaming-optimized servers, a Smart DNS service, or even just apps for lower-powered devices like Amazon Fire Sticks. Here are our findings:
VPN Provider | Number of locations in relevant country | Regional speed test results | Includes ad-blocker? | Works in high-censorship countries | Offers a smart DNS service | Streaming device apps | Can Unblock Tier 1 Streaming | Can Unblock Tier 2 Streaming | Can Unblock Tier 3 Streaming |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Category | Streaming | Streaming | Streaming | Streaming | Streaming | Streaming | Streaming | Streaming | Streaming |
NordVPN | 5+ locations | 300-500 Mbps | Yes | Yes | Yes | 2+ apps | Reliably | Yes | Yes |
Surfshark | 5+ locations | 500+ Mbps | Yes | Yes | Yes | 2+ apps | Reliably | Yes | Yes |
IPVanish | 5+ locations | 300-500 Mbps | Yes | Yes | No | 2+ apps | Reliably | Yes | Yes |
ExpressVPN | 5+ locations | 300-500 Mbps | Yes | Yes | Yes | 2+ apps | Reliably | Yes | Yes |
Proton VPN | 5+ locations | 100-299 Mbps | Yes | No | No | 1 app | Unreliably | Yes | Yes |
CyberGhost | 5+ locations | 100-299 Mbps | Yes | No | No | 2+ apps | Reliably | Yes | Yes |
PIA | 5+ locations | <100 Mbps | Yes | Yes | Yes | 1 app | Reliably | Yes | Yes |
PrivateVPN | 5+ locations | <100 Mbps | No | Yes | No | 2+ apps | Reliably | Yes | Yes |
Just like before, we assigned points and then weighted and normalized the results:
Surprisingly, we actually ended up with three providers fighting for first place: NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN. Each of these worked well with just about every streaming app we tested and can stop ads in their tracks. ProtonVPN had the lowest score (6.7 points); while it works relatively well, it struggled with some large platforms and was slightly less reliable overall.
Using a free VPN to get an IP address for Indonesia
Although free VPNs are tempting, there are plenty of reasons not to use them. Firstly, there simply aren’t many free VPNs with servers in Indonesia. But, even if you’re lucky enough to find a free VPN with a server or servers in Indonesia, chances are it’ll be slow. That’s because free VPNs attract a lot of users, and the servers simply can’t handle the demand. Free VPNs attempt to solve this by restricting your bandwidth, making streaming difficult.
Speaking of streaming, the performance provided by free VPNs is usually poor, with a lot of lag and buffering. Many free VPNs just don’t work at all with popular streaming platforms.
In addition, there are security risks to consider. Many free VPNs log your data and sell it to third parties, while others may carry malware. Aside from blocking content, Indonesia’s ISPs are also known to retain records of customer internet usage. As Indonesia is known to have a degree of internet censorship, a free VPN can’t guarantee your privacy. Use a free VPN at your own risk!
Why you might want an IP address for Indonesia
If you want to securely access websites and services from Indonesia, you either need to be in Indonesia or use a VPN. In doing so, you’ll have an Indonesian IP address. The very best VPNs for Indonesia have servers all around the world, allowing you to obtain IP addresses from a wide range of countries, including the US, UK, Australia, and Japan.
Freedom House rates Indonesia’s internet freedom as only “partly free” with a score of 46/100 (0 being the most free and 100 the least). In particular, censorship of online content is prevalent with the blocking of social media platforms in an attempt to counter fake news, terrorism, and pornography. What’s more, the Indonesian government launched Cyber Drone 9, an AI-driven crawler system designed to detect and flag content for blocking.
Apart from pornographic content, websites, services and apps that have been targeted for censorship include Netflix, Reddit, Vimeo, Telegram, Grindr and Tenor. ISPs in Indonesia are required to retain records of customer usage for at least 3 months, so a VPN can also protect your privacy.
Indonesia IP address FAQs
Are VPNs legal in Indonesia?
VPNs are legal in Indonesia. If you’re in Indonesia, we encourage you to use a VPN. That’s because internet censorship is prevalent in the country. An IP address for Indonesia can help you access government-restricted content and protect your own online privacy, preventing your ISP and the government from tracking you.
What other ways are there to get an Indonesia IP address (aside from a VPN)?
The main alternative to using a VPN to get an Indonesian IP address is to use a proxy service. A proxy also allows you to change your IP address, but the main difference is that most proxies don’t encrypt your internet traffic. The few that do use encryption only encrypt your browser traffic, so any apps you use won’t be secured.
For this reason, we recommend you use a VPN rather than a proxy to get an Indonesian IP address.
How do I test if my IP address has changed to Indonesia?
IP lookup tools are able to see if your IP address has been changed successfully. Simply open up your VPN, connect to an Indonesian server, and use a tool like WhatIsMyIPAddress. If your location shows as Indonesia, then you know you’ve successfully obtained an Indonesian IP address.
Which VPNs provide Indonesian servers?
If you want to watch Indonesian TV abroad, all you need to do is download a VPN and obtain an Indonesian IP address by connecting to a server in Indonesia. This will let you stream a host of content, including RCTI, MNCTV, SCTV, and Trans7. Indeed, an IP address from Indonesia will also let you watch popular streaming services from Southeast Asia, such as Iflix, HOOQ, Genflix, and Viu.
While there aren’t many options in terms of Indonesian sports streaming services, a VPN with servers in many countries in Southeast Asia and worldwide will allow you to use the likes of Fox Sports Asia, FuboTV, and ESPN.
