Pandora is the world’s most famous internet radio service. But there’s a drawback. If you want to listen to Pandora radio online outside of the USA, you will need to use a VPN for Pandora to gain a US IP address. How to access Pandora Radio from anywhere with a VPN
Don’t worry if you’ve never used a VPN before, regaining access to Pandora as you travel is easier than you might think. Just follow these steps, and you’ll be listening in no time:
- First, sign up for one of the VPNs above (we recommend NordVPN)
- Install the VPN app onto whichever device you usually listen on. Note that most providers let you connect around five devices at a time.
- Log in and select a server in the US, this will give you the US IP address you need to access Pandora Radio from abroad.
- Now, simply use Pandora as you normally would.
- If you’re still running into errors, clear your cookies (if using the web version) or data (if using the app) and try again. Failing that, your VPN’s customer support team should be able to help you further.
Our methodology: How we chose the best VPNs for Pandora
Choosing which VPN to use can be tricky, and the number of services available complicates things further. That’s why we set a strict list of criteria to ensure that only the best VPNs make our list. Here are the key things to consider when shopping for a Pandora VPN and what we expect, at a minimum, from the services we recommend:
- Server locations: Pandora is region-locked and can only be accessed in select countries. To unblock it while traveling, you’ll need a server in a support location, such as the US. Nearby servers usually provide the best performance, which is why we look for VPNs with networks covering many countries.
- Speed: We have to ensure that your VPN is fast enough for anything you throw at it, whether that’s listening to the radio, live streaming TV, torrenting, or watching videos on social media. We’ve speed-tested dozens of VPNs and will only ever recommend the best performers.
- Unblocking capabilities: Pandora might not be the only service from back home you’d like to access, which is why we look for VPNs that excel at beating regional blocking. For instance, we’ll test VPNs against platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max to see which can reliably access the most content.
- Security and privacy: VPNs are designed to protect your traffic from snoopers, and we won’t recommend any that fall short. At a minimum, we look for DNS and IPv6 leak protection, a kill switch, a no-logs policy, and 256-bit encryption. Naturally, we prefer providers that go even further.
- Price: We test a lot of VPNs, so it’s immediately obvious when one tries to charge more than it’s worth. All of the services we recommend are fairly priced, and we’ll always inform you about any deals to reduce the amount you pay to the absolute minimum. We also take a close look at the T&Cs, including the money-back guarantee and any free trials available.
- User-friendliness: Staying safe online shouldn’t be a hassle. Our top VPNs all have novice-friendly apps. Further, they all allow you to get help over live chat in case of any issues.
- Devices: You can listen to Pandora on multiple devices, so your VPN must work across platforms, too. We test each VPN on mobile and desktop before recommending it to our readers. We expect to see native apps for Android and iOS devices and a generous simultaneous device limit.
Believe it or not, this is just the beginning of our testing. If you’re interested, we have an in-depth post outlining Comparitech’s testing methodology.
Listening to Pandora with a free VPN
While it’s always tempting to opt for something for free rather than paying for yet another subscription, we don’t recommend it when it comes to VPNs. Free VPNs are simply inferior to paid providers. They tend to have higher numbers of users and few servers leading to high traffic, data caps, network congestion, waiting times, and frustrating buffering and lag while streaming.
Additionally, such services aren’t free in the proper use of the term. They have to monetize somehow – after all, they’re companies that have overheads such as staff costs and server maintenance – with the most obvious product being yourself.
As a user, your browsing habits are a potential goldmine for pesky advertisers. Supposedly free VPN providers have been caught inserting tracking cookies in their users’ devices and mining that data to sell to the highest bidder. That’s completely unethical, and even if this doesn’t happen to you, you’re definitely going to get a ton of invasive migraine-inducing advertisements. Best to avoid the risk and opt for a quality VPN provider instead.

Pandora Radio limitations
Note that Pandora Internet Radio limits free users to a certain number of skips within a set period of time. This limit varies depending on whether you have a paid subscription and your listening device.
Pandora no longer limits users to 40 hours of listening per month. This restriction has been removed.
Users on free accounts must listen to advertisements that cannot be skipped.
Using Pandora with a VPN: FAQs
Can I listen to Pandora without the app?
Yes. You can access Pandora’s website through a web browser and stream music from there. If you find that your VPN doesn’t work with the app, try the website instead.
How can I listen to Pandora offline?
Pandora’s premium versions allow for offline listening., Pandora Plus lets you listen to your top stations without an internet connection, while Pandora Premium lets you download specific songs.
Here’s how to listen to Pandora offline:
- Go to Profile
- Tap the cog icon (Settings)
- Toggle the Offline Mode slider to on.
Pandora Plus subscribers get their top stations offline. Premium users can go into My Collection and click the download icon next to songs to access them offline.
What are the alternatives to Pandora radio?
There’s no shortage of music streaming services and apps out there with both paid and free plans. Terrestrial Radio stations may have online options but they simply can’t compete with the amount of content music streaming services have to offer.
- Apple Music
- Spotify
- iHeartRadio
- Tidal
- Deezer
- Soundcloud
- Youtube
- Hype Machine
- Bandcamp
Does Pandora block VPNs?
We’ve seen reports that Pandora, like other region-locked streaming services, blocks any VPN connections it detects. In our testing, however, none of the VPNs we recommended above prevented us from listening on Android or desktop browsers.
Does Pandora work in Mexico?
Unfortunately, because Pandora is region-locked it won’t automatically work in Mexico. However, if you still want to listen to Pandora whilst traveling abroad in Mexico, all you have to do is connect to one of the VPNs listed above.
Is it illegal to use a VPN with Pandora?
No, it isn’t illegal to use a VPN to listen to Pandora, although it may be against the terms of use set by the broadcaster. VPN usage is legal in most countries, depending on what you use it for, but to be on the safe side, we’d recommend checking VPN rules in the country you’re connecting from.
Why is Pandora only available in specific countries?
Pandora is only available in the US due to licensing restrictions. More specifically, it doesn’t hold the rights to broadcast music worldwide (and it would be very costly to do so). In order to protect copyright holders, Pandora ensures its service is geo-blocked in every country aside from the US. It’s for this reason that you’d need to connect to a VPN server in the US and change your IP address in order to unblock and listen to Pandora from abroad.
What's the minimum internet speed needed to stream Pandora?
You should be able to stream music on Pandora with even the slowest of internet speeds. For example, Pandora states that if you want to listen via a desktop computer, you should have at least 150 kbps. For listening to High Quality audio, it recommends a minimum of 300 kbps. As such, streaming Pandora shouldn’t be an issue regardless of your ISP, VPN, or physical location.
VPN vs SOCKS proxy: which is better?
A SOCKS4 or SOCKS5 proxy works similar to a VPN in that your internet traffic is routed through a remote server, but SOCKS5 proxies are not encrypted by default. That makes them faster but significantly less private. Anyone who intercepts your internet traffic will be able to decipher it, unlike the encrypted packets sent through a VPN.
If all you want is to listen to Pandora radio online outside of the US, a SOCKS proxy is an acceptable option. Note that it might require configuring the settings on your device to route Pandora traffic through the proxy.
You might want to update your content to show that Australia and New Zealand haven’t had Pandora since 2017
Done!
I use a free version of protonvpn to unblock pandora, but I’m searching another one provider with possibility so stream Netflix. What about nordvpn? Is it fast?
Speed-wise, Nord is middle of the road
Pandora is closing its Australia and New Zealand service.
I’ve never used a VPN or proxy before. If I use such a service am I guaranteed to access Pandora USA?
Which service would you recommend for this purpose? Are they available for use on Mac and iPhone? I usually listen to Pandora through SONOS.
Your assistance / advice would be very much appreciated.
