Despite Discord’s growing popularity, it is now available everywhere, there are some countries, such as China and Iran, as well as schools, colleges, and workplaces that restrict access to the site or block it altogether. Luckily, there is a way to access the messaging platform regardless of where you are, you just need a VPN.
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) encrypt your internet traffic and hide your real location. This allows you to access Discord from anywhere and can also help you bypass an unfair Discord ban. As an added bonus, VPN users also enjoy an added level of online security that keeps their activities safe from prying eyes and snoopers.

It’s the only major VPN with its own router firmware too, giving users an easier way to use Discord safely on Xbox, PlayStation, or other gaming consoles.
This provider uses effectively-uncrackable encryption, a kill switch, and leak protection. It even has a custom protocol named Lightway that can hide your online activity while switching between networks! Now, ExpressVPN doesn’t have as many privacy features as some of its rivals, but repeated audits have shown that it keeps no logs. Additionally, it accepts Bitcoin, letting you sign up anonymously.

CyberGhost provides blazing-fast speeds (nearly 300 Mbps in our latest tests), and its network spans 100+ countries. Notably, this VPN offers specially-configured gaming servers, meaning you won’t have to manually try and find one that works with Discord. This VPN has unlimited bandwidth and lets users secure up to seven devices at a time. If you need help, live chat-based support is available 24/7.
This VPN includes a wide range of privacy features, including a smart rules tab that lets you decide how and when it’ll connect automatically. - Linux
Website: www.PrivateVPN.com
Money-back guarantee: 30 DAYS
PrivateVPN has only around 200 servers, but those servers are strategically located in over 60 countries and are known for their impressive speeds and unblocking abilities. It has no issues accessing Discord from anywhere and works perfectly in the UAE, China, and other places with stringent online restrictions. Further, it offers steady speeds and allows up to 10 simultaneous connections, which is roughly twice the industry average.
This premium VPN secures your internet traffic using 256-bit AES encryption and offers protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks. You can even use its stealth mode to hide the telltale signs of VPN usage on networks that usually block them outright. PrivateVPN doesn’t keep any logs, but in our judgment, it’d really benefit from proving this with an independent audit like some of its rivals have. Live chat is available almost 24/7, so you’re never too far from help.
PrivateVPN supports all popular platforms, including Windows, Android, MacOS, and iOS. You’ll have to manually configure it for use on Linux systems and supported routers.

Website: www.PrivateInternetAccess.com
Money-back guarantee: 30 DAYS
Private Internet Access has a large network of servers and respectable speeds, so it’s more than capable of keeping you safe during Discord calls. What’s more, it allows P2P activity, works with a wide range of streaming sites, including Netflix US, and supports unlimited connections. In other words, there’s very little that this VPN can’t help you with.
PIA users can take advantage of 256-bit encryption, DNS leak protection, local traffic blocking, and a kill switch feature. There are also several more advanced privacy features, such as remote port selection, multi-hop servers, and split tunneling, but most importantly, Private Internet Access refuses to keep any logs. If you run into problems, don’t panic; you’ll also have 24-hour access to live chat support.
Private Internet Access offers apps for the following operating systems: Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Linux. You’ll also find an app for Amazon Fire TV as well as Chrome, Firefox, and Opera browser extensions. Use with routers requires manual setup.

8. PureVPN
works with DiscordTested Nov 2024
Apps Available:
- PC
- Mac
- IOS
- Android
- Linux
Website: www.PureVPN.com
Money-back guarantee: 31 DAYS
PureVPN operates roughly 6,000 servers in 60+ countries, so there’s bound to be one nearby, regardless of your location. It’s one of the fastest providers we’ve tested, with average speeds of nearly 400 Mbps – that’s fast enough to stream on all of your devices simultaneously, so video calling won’t be a problem at all. As well as Discord, this VPN works with Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video. There’s a 10-connection limit, and staff are only ever a quick message away if you need help.
One of the best things about this service is how straightforward it is. From the moment you connect, your data is secured with unbreakable encryption, a kill switch, and leak protection. Automatic obfuscation kicks in whenever PureVPN realizes you’re in a place with strict online restrictions, and more importantly, there’s an independently verified zero-logs policy. If you’d like tracker-blocking or port-forwarding functionality, though, you’ll have to pay a little more.
PureVPN has apps for Windows, Linux, MacOS, iOS, and Android devices. Its website provides manual configuration instructions in case you’d rather run it directly on your router.
Pros:
- High-speed servers all over the world
- Does a great job of keeping you safe
- Can beat almost any online restriction
Cons:
- Doesn’t have many advanced options
- No kill switch on Apple platforms
Our score:

works with DiscworldTested Nov 2024
Apps Available:
- PC
- Mac
- IOS
- Android
- Linux
Website: www.protonvpn.com
Money-back guarantee: 30 DAYS
ProtonVPN boasts a particularly large network of 5,000+ servers in 91 countries. While it won’t let you use Discord in places like China, it easily sidesteps any less stringent online restrictions. For instance, you could unblock Discord at the office, stream Hulu while on vacation abroad, or take advantage of services that normally prevent VPN usage outright. Still not impressed? What if we told you it offers exceptionally high speeds, automatic ad-blocking, and 24/7 support?
There’s no need to worry about anyone monitoring your activities, either. ProtonVPN follows a zero-logs policy and has proven it via independent audit. Its security toolkit includes uncrackable encryption, a kill switch, leak protection, and Secure Core servers that send your data through multiple locations, making you even harder to track. Split tunneling and port forwarding support are present too; the amount of options available may be a little overwhelming for beginners, but experienced users will appreciate the flexibility they provide.
ProtonVPN has its own MacOS, Windows, Linux, Android, and iOS apps. It supports most routers too although you will have to configure your connection manually.
Pros:
- Free plan with no bandwidth limits
- No-logs VPN boasting lots of advanced privacy features
- Unblocks a ton of region-locked services
Cons:
- Secure Core servers are quite a bit slower
- Less suitable for novice users
Our score:
QUICK AND SECURE:ProtonVPN has the speed, security, and unblocking ability needed to use Discord safely on nearly any network. It also works with popular platforms like Skype and Telegram. Upgrade to a paid plan for a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Methodology: How we found the best VPNs for Discord
There are hundreds of VPNs on the market. However, to use Discord safely from anywhere, you’ll need one with powerful security, high speeds, and the ability to go undetected. Needless to say, these requirements significantly reduce the number of options you have.
Here’s what we expect from the best Discord VPNs:
- Server choice: Your VPN’s server network must offer at least 50 different locations to make sure you’re not reliant on servers half a world away. This also impacts which country’s content you’ll be able to access, so more is always better
- Speed and reliability: Slow speeds lead to laggy audio and choppy video calls, which is why we only recommend VPNs that perform well in our regular speed tests. We also take a provider’s reliability into account; after all, it’s not enough for your VPN to only work well at certain times of the day.
- Versatility: We extensively test VPNs to see if they’re suitable for Discord chats, P2P activity, gaming, and using streaming services like Disney+, Peacock, and Paramount+. We also strongly prefer those that work in countries with oppressive online censorship
- Security: We require excellent security as a bare minimum. This means we need 256-bit encryption, a kill switch, and protection against DNS and IPv6 leaks even to be considered for our list. That said, we also look for wifi protection, obfuscated servers, tracker blocking, and a no-logs policy
- Price: Some VPNs try to charge more than is really justifiable, given their functionality. Needless to say, we only recommend services that are priced fairly. All the same, we’ll let you know about any discounts and guarantees they offer. Where possible, we try and claim these ourselves to see if it’s really as straightforward as it seems
- User-friendliness: Digital privacy should be available to everyone. That’s why we prioritize VPNs with multi-platform support, easy-to-use apps, and live chat-based support (ideally available 24/7).
Of course, this is far from the only testing we perform. We’ve actually put together a guide that explains exactly how we test VPNs at Comparitech.
How to use Discord securely with a VPN
New to VPNs and not sure where to start? Don’t worry they’re surprisingly simple. Follow the step-by-step guide below, and you’ll be using Discord from anywhere in no time.
Here’s how to access Discord from anywhere with a VPN:
- First of all, sign up for one of the VPNs below (we recommend NordVPN).
- Next, download and install the software, making sure to get the correct version for your device.
- Login to the VPN app and select a server. If you are trying to bypass school, work, or college restrictions, you can select a server near your actual location. If you’re in a country in which Discord is blocked, opt for a server in Europe or North America, where the site is unrestricted.
- Open Discord and start a call. You should now be able to communicate securely.
- If you notice any problems, try deleting your browser cache and cookies so that old location identifiers are removed. Alternatively, try using a different server or contacting your VPN’s customer support team for further advice. You might also want to consult Discord’s help section in case the issue isn’t VPN-related.
Why you might need a VPN for Discord
The main reason to use a VPN with Discord is so that you can access it anywhere. Some workplaces, schools, and colleges will block access to Discord to improve productivity. In addition, some countries block the messaging site altogether. A VPN helps you bypass all these restrictions and access Discord from anywhere. But in addition to restricted access VPNs can also help you increase your privacy and security when using Discord.
Discord users have been clamoring for end-to-end encryption for years, but the company is hesitant to add it, which means that your messages are not 100% private. Discord sends your communications over HTTPS, which means that your ISP can’t see the contents of your messages, only that you’re accessing Discord. However, if you’re using the service at work, for instance, your employer may have its own web proxy in place and, as such, would be able to read the contents of your messages. In addition, if you connect to Discord on public wifi networks, it’s not just the hotspot owner who could intercept your communications; hackers often target public networks since they’re rarely as secure as they should be.
Then there’s Discord’s privacy policy. This service mentions that it also logs information, including your IP address and device ID, and that it “generally” doesn’t record calls. Short of using third-party plugins (or encrypting your messages before sending them, which would be extremely time-consuming), there’s no way to hide the contents of your messages. By using a VPN, though, you can prevent your other identifiable information from being recorded.
How to Bypass the Discord Ban in Turkey
On October 9, 2024, Turkish ISPs began blocking access to the popular online messaging platform Discord following a court decision. The ban has been enforced by the Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) after Discord refused to share information with the Turkish government. The authorities demanded data, such as IP addresses, in connection with allegations of child sexual abuse on the platform.
However, the national Discord ban came just days after the murder of two women in Istanbul by a 19-year-old, which stirred public outrage. Following the crime, some Discord users praised the incident, and many believe that those shocking comments directly influenced the government’s decision to ban Discord.
For people living in or visiting Turkey, the ban means you can no longer access Discord unless you use a VPN. All of the VPNs for Discord reviewed in this guide offer secure access to Discord from anywhere in the world, including Turkey. This makes it easy to bypass the ban and keep communicating with friends and family on Discord.
A VPN works by allowing you to connect to a server outside of Turkey, which masks your location and bypasses any blocks ordered by the Turkish government. This lets you use Discord, WhatsApp, and other restricted services as if you were in another country.
Using a VPN also adds a layer of privacy by encrypting your internet traffic, making it much harder for anyone – including ISPs and government authorities – to track your online activity. This means you can unblock Discord in Turkey, without worrying about being monitored by local networks, IPS, or the authorities.
Using a VPN with Discord: FAQs
Can I use a free VPN with Discord?
Free VPNs can be appealing at first glance, but there are several reasons why we advise against using them. These services often have more users than their networks can support, which leads to slow speeds and intermittent connections. In practical terms, your voice might sound distorted or robotic when using VoIP services, and your video will likely stutter or pause during video calls. Additionally, not every VPN works with Discord; paid services can usually find a workaround relatively quickly but there’s no guarantee a free VPN will let you access Discord in the first place.
Unfortunately, many free providers simply lie about how privacy-conscious they are. We’ve seen several “no-logs” services accidentally leave gigabytes of sensitive information on the web for anyone to view. With this in mind, it’s clear that using a reputable VPN with a proven no-logs policy is the best way to protect yourself online.
Why doesn’t my VPN work properly with Discord?
There are two main reasons why your VPN might cause problems with Discord. First, it must support UDP connections. These days, most VPNs allow users to choose between UDP and TCP when using the OpenVPN protocol, so this shouldn’t really be an issue.
It’s far more likely that you’re using a server that has received an IP ban. Trolls often target Discord servers, receive a ban, and switch to a new VPN server to pick up where they left off. Predictably, this problem is most commonly seen with free VPNs; with smaller server networks, there are only so many addresses to use. If you’re using one of the VPNs recommended above and are still encountering this issue, switching servers will likely allow you to use Discord without any problems.
Can I bypass a Discord ban with a VPN?
If you’ve been banned from a Discord server, the system records your username and IP address. While you can create a new account, you’ll still be blocked unless you have access to a second device or other method of changing your IP address (such as a VPN).
Once you’ve connected to your VPN, simply log into Discord with your fresh account and try joining your chosen server again. You should be able to chat without any issues, but if not, you might want to change the phone number that’s linked to your account since this may be the cause.
Is Discord banned in the UAE?
Discord technically isn’t banned in the United Arab Emirates but as free VoIP services like Skype are blocked, you won’t be able to use voice channels. With the right VPN, though, it’s easy to use Discord in the UAE.
In addition to the UAE, you won’t be able to use Discord’s voice chat in:
- China
- Oman
- Iran
- Egypt
- Saudi Arabia
