Trying to find out how to watch your Canadian TV shows in the US or anywhere else abroad? We’ll explain exactly how to catch up with your favorite Canadian content from anywhere in the world with the help of a VPN and a Canadian IP address. This is perfect if you’re traveling away from Canada on vacation and want to keep access to your favorite shows.
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) encrypt your network traffic, enabling you to browse the internet safely without your activities being monitored by hackers, network administrators, or your Internet Service Provider (ISP). They allow you to access geo-blocked services from other countries by connecting to a server in that country. This will allow you to watch Canadian TV from abroad.
We’ll take a look at the best VPNs for the job in detail, but here’s a quick summary first in case you’re short on time.

Methodology: How we found the best VPNs for Canadian TV
Not every VPN is suitable for live streaming, and fewer still are a good choice when it comes to watching Canadian TV. That’s because platforms like Crave, Global TV, and DAZN have particularly strong geo-restriction measures built in. Below, you’ll find a quick rundown of the main features we looked out for in the best VPNs for streaming Canadian TV:
- Servers in Canada: Most of your usual streaming services require you to have a Canadian IP address. That’s why Canadian servers are a must-have, with higher numbers providing a more stable experience overall. But we also look for providers that have a large global server network, too. This gives you the freedom to access international content as well.
- Streaming ability: We test our top VPNs with all of the most popular Canadian streaming services, including Crave, Global TV, Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney Plus. This way, you’ll always have options when it comes to what to watch.
- Performance: To make sure your VPN is fast enough to handle whatever you throw at it, we regularly run hundreds of speed tests. Only the VPNs that deliver impressive speeds earn a spot on our list, but we also take their consistency into account.
- Security and privacy: Our top VPNs must include 256-bit encryption, a kill switch, a no-logs policy, and protection against IPv6 and DNS leaks at a bare minimum. However, security is particularly important to us, so more advanced features, such as stealth modes, are always welcome.
- Ease of use: Everyone should be able to browse the web safely. That’s why we look for multi-platform support, well-designed apps, and live chat-based customer support. Naturally, if there are any other features that make the service even more welcoming, that’s a huge bonus.
- Value for money: staying safe online shouldn’t cost a fortune, so we look for providers that offer plenty of bang for your buck. We like to see an abundance of features, high simultaneous connection allowance, free trials, and money-back guarantees. We’ve also included coupons and discount links here so that you can be sure you’re getting the best deal.
Looking to find out more about how we test potential recommendations? We actually have a post that explains our entire VPN testing process.
Watching Canadian TV abroad with a free VPN
Although free VPNs can be tempting, we don’t recommend using one, particularly if you’d like to stream. These services tend to have small server networks with a constant influx of users. This causes major slowdowns, which manifest in slow browsing speeds and frequently stuttering video that takes a long time to buffer. Additionally, most free VPNs are unable to bypass geo-blocking on popular streaming services, so you may not be able to watch anything.
Unless you’re familiar with the ins and outs of computer networking, it can be difficult to tell if you’re even using a legitimate VPN or not. A 2015 survey of 283 free VPN apps found that over 38% included malware, and of the ones that didn’t, 84% leaked data over IPv6. Worse, 18% never even encrypted user traffic at all. Even well-known services come with risks, as we found during the Hola botnet scandal.
The best way to protect yourself online is to use a reputable VPN that logs no personally identifiable information and has a history of standing up for its users’ privacy.
Streaming Canadian TV with a VPN: FAQs
Which Canadian TV channels and services can I use with a VPN?
If you live in Canada but are currently on vacation or traveling for work, you can use a VPN to get an IP address back home. This will let you watch a wide variety of Canadian TV channels and streaming services.
By connecting to a Canadian server, you can easily stream content on your usual Canadian accounts – even when you’re outside of Canada in the US, Europe, the UK, or anywhere else.
To help you out we have included a list of the most popular Canadian services you can access with a VPN:
Watch live Canadian TV channels with a VPN
CTV, CityTV, Space, and Sportsnet: These channels offer live streams that are usually only available in Canada. To stream these live TV channels you will need to connect to a VPN server in Canada. The good news is that once you have a valid IP address you will be able to enjoy live news, sports, entertainment, soaps, reality TV, and much more for free. For example, CTV is the home to popular Canadian TV shows like The Amazing Race Canada, Sullivan’s Crossing, and Transplant.
CHCH, CP24, TVA, and CBC: These Canadian networks offer free-to-watch live streams that do not require an account. However, you’ll need a VPN to access them from outside Canada. Once connected to a VPN, you can watch live news updates, local TV shows, and regional programming. For example, CBC is home to shows like Run the Burbs, Heartland, When Calls the Heart, and Kim’s Convenience.
Canadian Streaming Services
CBC Gem: CBC Gem is a streaming service that offers a large selection of Canadian TV shows, news, movies, and exclusive original series. Some popular titles on CBC Gem include Schitt’s Creek, The Great Canadian Baking Show, and exclusive content like Sort Of. CBC Gem also features live CBC News. You can access this service by connecting to a VPN server in Canada.
Crave: Crave is Canada’s most popular streaming platform. It provides shows from a variety of networks including HBO, Showtime, and Starz – along with original Canadian programs. This means you can use a VPN to watch exclusive shows like Letterkenny, Canada’s Drag Race, The Last of Us, and Succession.
Global TV: Global TV broadcasts a number of popular TV shows from networks like HGTV, Food Network Canada, and Global News. With a VPN, you can watch shows like Big Brother Canada, Survivor, and NCIS live or on-demand.
Paramount+ Canada: The Canadian version of Paramount+ is available exclusively in Canada. You can use a VPN to regain access to your account on vacation to watch Star Trek: Discovery, Mayor of Kingstown, and many other popular shows.
TSN and Sportsnet Now: TSN and Sportsnet Now are sports streaming platforms in Canada. You can stream live coverage of NHL hockey, CFL football, NBA basketball, and more by using a VPN.
Netflix Canada: Netflix Canada has one of the most extensive Netflix catalogs with exclusive shows that are not available elsewhere. For example, you can use a VPN to watch Netflix Canada and stream Madmen or Mr. D from anywhere in the world.
Benefits of Using a VPN with Canadian Streaming Services
Using a VPN allows you to:
- Access geo-blocked content: Many Canadian streaming platforms, like CBC Gem and Crave, are geo-blocked. This means you need a VPN to stream them from abroad. With a VPN, you can get a valid Canadian IP address to watch your accounts while traveling.
- Watch live sports: Stay up-to-date with Canadian sports events through TSN, RDS, and Sportsnet Now, even when traveling overseas.
- Unlock exclusive libraries: Services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Paramount+ have region-specific content. A VPN helps you watch exclusive Canadian shows and movies.
Whether it’s catching up on Heartland on CBC Gem or watching live NHL games on TSN, using a VPN gives you the freedom to enjoy Canadian content from anywhere in the world.
How else can a VPN help me?
If you travel frequently, you can use VPNs for more than just streaming. For example, if you log into your RBS, Bank of Montreal (BMO), or CIBC bank account from a different country, you run the risk of tripping automated fraud prevention systems. However, if you connect to a Canadian server first, you can access your bank account abroad with no issues.
Traveling can actually create problems using your usual services. You could find yourself unable to place bets on your usual gambling site due to geo-locking or end up locked out of your favorite games due to a new login in a foreign country. VPNs not only help reduce the risk of this happening but also allow you to protect yourself when using public wifi networks, which can be less than secure.
Are VPNs legal in Canada?
VPNs are completely legal in Canada and most of the world. After all, millions of people use them to protect their online privacy every single day. Without this technology, remote workers would struggle to securely access company networks, activists would have difficulty communicating in countries with repressive regimes, and international journalists would have problems reporting from places like China.
Unless you’re using a VPN to commit crimes online, there’s no reason you’d get into any trouble. Just make sure not to download copyrighted material, break local laws, or access illegal content, and you’ll be fine.
Can I stream Canadian TV for free?
If you have a Canadian cable TV subscription, you can log into your provider’s website and watch online at no added cost. Additionally, these same login credentials can help you stream CBC, Global TV, RDS, TSN, and more, provided you’re already paying for these respective channels.
Just want to see what a network has to offer? Many streaming services, including Stack TV, RDS Direct, and Paramount+, offer a free trial. Just cancel before this expires so your payment method isn’t charged.
Will a VPN slow down my connection?
Yes, a VPN can slow down your connection. A VPN is excellent for protecting your privacy and security online but can also affect your internet speed. Several factors can cause a VPN to slow down your connection, such as:
- The distance between you and the VPN server: The farther away you are from the server you connect to, the longer your data travels back and forth. This can result in higher latency and lower bandwidth. To minimize this effect, you should choose a server close to your physical location or the website you want to access.
- The load on the VPN server: The more users are connected to a server, the more traffic it has to handle. This can reduce the available bandwidth and speed for each user. To avoid this problem, you should choose a server that is not overcrowded or switch to another server if you experience slowdowns.
- The encryption and protocol used by the VPN: A VPN encrypts your data before sending it through a secure tunnel to the server. This process adds some overhead and takes time, affecting your speed. The level of encryption and the type of protocol the VPN uses can also make a difference. Some protocols are faster than others but may offer less security or compatibility. You should choose a VPN that balances speed and security, allowing you to switch between different protocols if needed.
Can I use a VPN to watch Canadian Netflix abroad?
Yes, a VPN can allow you to watch Canadian Netflix abroad. As per our instructions in this post, you need only connect to a VPN server in Canada. This will change your IP address to a Canadian one, allowing you to securely access Canadian Netflix from anywhere in the world. Just remember that you may need to try more than one server because Netflix is a tricky platform known for detecting and blocking VPNs. Be sure to clear your cookies before accessing Netflix Canada as well. This ensures the streaming platform forgets your previous IP address and location.
Ian, I have also tried IP Vanish with Shaw’s Free Range TV and it will not work either. Has anyone confirmed Telus Optik TV or Bell TV apps working in the States with a VPN?
We have tried a VPVN for Shaw and they still block it. Any of these work for Shaw.
Hi Arthur, is this for the Shaw FreeRange TV app? Can I ask which VPN you tried already? Thanks, Ian
Strong VPN. Does not work for Shaw range
Hi Art, I’ve looked into this for you. Most of the VPNs I’ve contacted either haven’t heard of this service or couldn’t confirm whether it would work or not. Having said that, most, like ExpressVPN, come with a money-back guarantee. This means you can sign up, see if it’s able to unblock Shaw, and cancel if it can’t. Hope this helps, Ian
Yes. We have strong.
