You can use PrivateVPN and VyprVPN via their desktop and mobile apps. These are available for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS. However, VyprVPN also has its own browser extensions and a command line interface for Linux, whereas PrivateVPN has to be manually configured. Both of these services allow 10 simultaneous connections, which is twice the industry standard. If that’s still not enough, you can manually configure either VPN to work with compatible wireless routers.

Some VPNs include lots of extra features. Often related to security, these features may be an ad-blocker or password manager, for example. These providers don’t really include much beyond the basics, though PrivateVPN does have a stealth mode and a customizable kill switch while VyprVPN has automatic wifi protection.

Streaming and Netflix comparison

You shouldn’t have too many issues when it comes to streaming with PrivateVPN and VyprVPN. As you can see in the table above, both VPNs are able to securely access most major streaming services, be it Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, or Hulu. Indeed, they also successfully work with various Netflix libraries including Netflix US. This is particularly impressive considering that this service has some of the strictest anti-VPN measures of any major streaming platform.

Still, VyprVPN did work with ABC, the only platform we tested that foiled PrivateVPN. This channel has surprisingly strict VPN-detection systems, so it’s a good sign that VyprVPN will let you access just about anything.

Which of these VPNs work in China?

Unlike many of their competitors, PrivateVPN and VyprVPN both work in China.  This is impressive considering China’s infamous censorship, with the Great Firewall of China restricting access to many websites and services. In fact, even the likes of Google, Facebook, Netflix, and Wikipedia are all blocked in China.

Note that the PrivateVPN and VyprVPN websites aren’t accessible in mainland China. As such, you’ll need to install them before departing for your visit.

PrivateVPN’s Stealth VPN is a simple, toggleable feature that allows you to bypass VPN blocks in countries such as China. It does this by disguising the VPN traffic as regular web traffic even when subjected to deep packet inspection. The same can be said for VyprVPN which is able to bypass censorship thanks to its proprietary Chameleon protocol.

Setup and interface

PrivateVPN and VyprVPN both offer beginner-friendly apps with a large quick-connection button front and center. PrivateVPN’s servers are organized alphabetically and searchable, but you’ll have to switch to Advanced view to access  the app’s settings. This includes adjustable encryption, a customizable kill switch, and the option to use obfuscated servers for enhanced privacy.

VyprVPN has recently given its apps a makeover. They still work in exactly the same way, but look a little bit sleeker. By default, it uses the fastest-available server, but you can search through the list of locations if you’d prefer. There’s also a new icon in the top-right that displays important info about your connection, like your IP address and total bandwidth used this session.

In both cases, servers are organized by country and further subdivided by city. The two VPNs let you favorite specific servers so you can access them faster in future. With VyprVPN, you can even order servers by speed to help you find the fastest connection for streaming or torrenting.

You’ll be pleased to hear that both apps maintain the bulk of their functionality on mobile devices. The only compromise is that you’ll have to manually set up the kill switch, although each VPN walks you through the process.

Servers and performance

VyprVPN has approximately 700 servers while PrivateVPN has around 230. Neither has a particularly large network when compared to NordVPN (5,000 servers), Surfshark (3,200), or CyberGhost (9,000). Despite this, both PrivateVPN and VyprVPN provide support plenty of locations. PrivateVPN servers can be found in 63 countries while VyprVPN’s servers are located across 70 countries. Each also has servers in countries that the other doesn’t. For example, PrivateVPN has servers in Peru and Moldova while VyprVPN offers servers in Algeria and Slovenia.

VyprVPN is significantly faster than PrivateVPN, averaging over 210 Mbps. In contrast, PrivateVPN averaged around 70 Mbps, which is still impressive, but may not be enough if lots of people in your house like to stream at the same time. Of course, the speeds you experience may vary and it really depends on the server you connect to and how far it is from your physical location (the closer the server, the faster the speeds are likely to be).

Security

These providers both support the OpenVPN protocol but branch out in different directions after that. PrivateVPN, for instance, also lets you connect via L2TP and PPTP (although the latter is no longer considered secure). Meanwhile, VyprVPN supports IKEv2, WireGuard, and its own proprietary protocol, Chameleon.

With these VPNs, your internet traffic is secured with 256-bit AES encryption. This makes it almost impossible for third parties to access your data, even if intercepted. If your VPN connection drops, each VPN has a kill switch that cuts your internet traffic. This prevents your data from being exposed, particularly if you’re using a public Wi-Fi hotspot, for example. PrivateVPN actually lets you stop sending data from specific apps, which is a huge advantage.

PrivateVPN and VyprVPN have strict no-logs policies. This means that they don’t store any records of your activities, particularly that which could be used to identify you. In fact, VyprVPN has been independently audited to verify its no-logs policy and recently became a member of the VPN Trust Initiative. PrivateVPN and VyprVPN are headquartered in countries with strong privacy laws (Sweden and Switzerland, respectively).

These are two of the better VPNs when it comes to customer support. Indeed, both provide live chat support. In the case of VyprVPN, this is available 24/7. However, PrivateVPN’s live chat support is only online up to 22 hours per day. There’s also the option of email support although, like most VPNs, neither PrivateVPN nor VyprVPN provides phone support.
